NYFA grants

hi all, the deadline for the NYFA fellowships are coming up. Photography, among other categories of the arts are awarded $7000 grants on a bi-annual cycle. This year is photo again. The deadline is oct 3rd, and NYFA offers one of the most simple and painless grant applications in existence. As far as I know, this is only open to New York state residents.

Thanks Teru
If you won a NYFA photo grant a few years back are you able to apply again, I think there is a waiting period to apply again if you already won a grant.

Re: NYFA grants

Hi everyone --
most welcome, and yes, i think once you have won a nyfa, you are not eligible for a few years. not sure how many years, but I know some OGs who have won NYFAs over and over. It's been 5 years for me, so i think Im good to go. the last time I applied, it was remarkably simple, 4 slides, and your name and address. not much else. don't know if it has gotten more complex since then, but it was really a nice, easy one.

let me just say again, it's all good to post info on grants and awards here on the message boards, but even better to also put them in the resources section. It will be much easier on members in the future to find the listings if they are centralized there. there's a limit to the effectiveness of the LS search tool, and as more and more members post more and more listings, a lot of good intel will get lost.

another feature on the grants listings in resources -- you can list names of LS members who have won these grants in the past, so that people will know who to contact for advice or information on applying. for members who don't want to be contacted, you can remove your names.

Re: NYFA grants

People who won a NYFA in 2003, 2004 or 2005 cannot yet apply again. And you must be able to prove NY state residency for two years prior to the date of the award. Not to worry, they are pretty lax about this: I actually showed them a photograph of my car running a red light (issued by the NY City Finance Dpt) in order to prove that I was in NY for one of the years prior to the award. I was thinking of applying for another NYFA in a different category, nonfiction writing, which comes up the Fall after this one. Course, I have not really been a resident of New York for a while, but I could always run a couple more red lights in the years to come. Anyone want to lend me a car for the purpose?

Also, the application process just got simpler. After surveying all of us, they decided to allow submission of digital imagery, so now you get 8 digital images. this makes it even easier and cheaper to apply. Though I will say that projecting one's slides on the wall can make a stronger impression on judges than viewing jpegs on a computer screen. also, remember that the judges change every year, so that if you dont get it one year, it makes sense to apply again. First time I applied I was rejected, and the second time I got it. At the awards ceremony I met the other photo winners and realized that we were all more or less documentary types, so I guessed that that was the year that the judges were into that kind of work.

i also want to urge people to do exactly what Teru requests and be sure to add any and all grant info to the database we have created here, so that future LS generations can benefit, and we dont need to keep posting them on a yearly basis. I had forgotten about posting names of winners, and that is a very good idea too. Good luck to all of you.
