Looks like LULU.COM won't ship that easily anymore ...

... at least not internationally. can anyone recommend another print-on-demand place? blurb doesn't accept pdf files, at least not yet, and i really want to be able to design my pages - their insert images little software is not exactly what i want. what other options are out there? i found out about this only after working for weeks to finish my book and after ordering from them before .... it's just so damn frustrating

I'm just in the process of creating a blurb book using inDesign. There is a process to convert InDesign spreads to JPEG for Blurb use. It's a bit clunky, but it works and you only need to do it once. I'm going to try to set up a PS action to do it more easily. I'll send you the action if you're interested, once I design it.

Jonathan, please do .... I guess you are talking about pdf'ing the indesign and save it as seperate jpg's that would be insterted as images into the blurb soft? If you know of and action .... gladly ... but if i had to do it manually i'd rather quit the whole idea. i't hard enough to only prepare for print properly the indesign files

Re: Looks like LULU.COM won't ship that easily anymore ...

I'm frustrated cause I can't use the Blurb software as my G3 Mac is too old. I want to do a book using Blurb to send to prospective publishers or do it all myself. I'd like to try Blurb to see if it's better that Lulu and some have suggested. Any way around this for an old Mac man?

Re: Looks like LULU.COM won't ship that easily anymore ...

Paul, Blurb's BookSmart software requirements say it does work on G3 Macs with sufficient power and OS:

Requirements for Macintosh<br>
Download Size: 13MB <br>
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later <br>
Memory: 512 MB minimum, 1GB preferred <br>
Processor: 1 GHz G3 minimum <br>
Disk space to install application: 21MB <br>
Screen Resolution: 1024x768 minimum, 1600x1200 preferred <br>

G. Muj, if you have friends in a place to where Blurb does ship, you could have your books sent there and then re-sent to you by the friends. Shipping by Blurb to someone you know within the US is cheapest, of course. Presumably, US friends could open a Blurb book store for you as well, and you'd simply upload your books to it, from wherever on the planet you are. I'm pretty sure there are legalities involved, so if you go that route, in your shoes I'd check them out.

I have a list of publishers who do small press run books on my laptop. It's in for repair, but I'll post the list when I get the laptop back on Tuesday evening.

Still working on the action - had to go out of town on a personal matter. The action is the last thing I'm going to do before I make the book, whcih I should have finished in about a week. I'll post it here as soon as I do. Nice to have some pressure to get back to work...

Re: Looks like LULU.COM won't ship that easily anymore ...

OK, so I'm finally working on the action but have run into problems. What I had intended to do was this:

1. Export from InDesign to PDF
2. Open the PDF file in Photoshop, each page becomes one PS file.
3. Action will save each successive page as 001.png 002.png, etc

Here is the problem: because of the way the files open in PS (the order), they don't save in the right order. Each spread is flipped. So, if I have pages 1,2,3,4,5,6, the script will save them as 2,1,4,5,6,5.

The action is applied to all open files after they get opened through the Import PDF dialog box. Can anyone think of a way to change the order somehow?
