Congrats to Balazs and Kai for winning the Getty Grants. Congrats to Scott Lewis too (not sure if you're a Lighstalker).

Balazs is a talent and a great guy, and Kai knows more about the middle east than anyone this side of Fareed Zakaria. Balazs, does this mean next time you're in New York you're buying?

I dont think Scott is a member but he ought to be! LS would have swept the awards. Well done Balazs and Kai, and excellent topics too. ¡e' palante que vamos!

Scott! A thousand pardons! I looked you up but the search engine failed to turn up your name (nothing is perfect). Then it's a grand slam for LS. Congratulations Scott, your topic sounds really interested and I would love to hear more about it. Have fun in Perp: half the LS membership is over there now it seems (the other half in or heading to New Orleans).

David Holloway makes 4 out of 5, and joins the ranks of the Lightstalkers recovering hardcore contingent.

also, significant news -- Getty quietly announced at Perpignan that they are dropping the one-year syndication caveat on the grant. Winners are invited to syndicate their work through Getty, but it is not a requirement.

As of this round of grants, it's $20,000 straight up, no strings attached.

"Feedback" from the photographic community was cited as the explanation for the last minute change of heart. So kudos to Getty for this unexpected step, and congratulations to everyone who challenged themon their original terms -- especially Jay DeFoore.

Thanks for the flowers Jay, as usually I´m a little bit late. I was a in China and a few days in Rome. As already said I want to emphasize that there are no more regulation on grant, though there is still the option to distribute with Getty. As the grant programme just starts I want to encourage everybody to take part in it. This year only 130 photographers applied, which might had to do regulation of the distribution. But for 5 grants that is a very small number applicants. For me the grant helps a lot to finished my wallbook with Steidl (I hope every lightstalker buys one, so I become a rich man!). It will be out in spring. Basicly this project showed me again how difficult it is to get support on bigger project with serious issues. Every pictureeditor says how good the pictures are, but very few support it. May be because of the stupid format? I really love to work with the 6x17. It was a little bit like discovering photography for myself again and made a lot of fun. I love it, though its very expensive. For the last monthlong trip in spring I had no backing at all. Now I can go back for another month at the end of October and go with laying bricks. That will be the end for the project, if there is no snow in Jerusalem around Xmas....
