Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

I am considering putting together a project here in New Orleans for this year’s Mardi Gras which might interest
Lightstalker members. I would like to know how many photographers would be interested in coming to the city to document Mardi Gras, set against a backdrop of the recovering city. Photographers would be responsible for their own costs here, and would receive specific assignments to complete over the course of a week or so. I think that I can maximize the profile of the event here in New Orleans and that there is the possibility of interest in media outlets here depending on the level of participation. My question to the group is if this is an appealing idea, and what would be a reasonable charge for participation in this project.

Basically I am looking for input at this point and depending on the response I may decide to offer additional features like portfolio reviews or smaller workshops or working groups depending on what folks want. I am open to suggestion at this point. Mardi Gras is one of the premier events in America and set against a backdrop of post-Katrina New Orleans will be of special interest to serious photographers. This will be open to all, no portfolio requirements.

Please PM your thoughts on this, or email me at andyimages10001@yahoo.com. My phone is 504 701-0961.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

When I was down there a year ago, the main tourist areas (Bourbon street and the Garden district) seemed to be virtually unaffected. What angle are you looking at to show the contrast of joyous Mardi Gras with the devastation post-Katrina? Hasn't the city made every effort to hide the problems from the tourists, therefore any Mardi Gras activity will take place around the glossy veneer of a new New Orleans?

This idea strikes me as interesting, but not sure how it could be done.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Brian, I want to do the Mardi Gras with a large group of photographers all with specific assignments, it would take 30-50 photographers to really do the whole thing correctly, by shooting specific stories. Mardi Gras Day there are virtually parades all over the city involving all social strata, from the skeleton crews who come out in the Treme to Rex, the most prestigious parade. One photographer might be in an old age home, another might be in a hospital. This has never been done before. It would be a Day in the Life, but Mardi Gras day.....besides a great party, it would also be a way to put together a book on one specific Mardi Gras, which, depending on the photographers involved, might draw interest from local publishers and possibly from the travel industry as well. So there are a wide range of possibilities. I think this would be a great project for someone developing a portfolio or who has never worked in the context of a real assignment, with all the accompanying pressures involved. At the least I think we could have a Lulu style book that could be ordered and something that could be used as a portfolio piece. I like to work off the cuff and out front if this happens I want it to start here and get input.

Andy, I think your idea is great. Sounds like great fun, and it's always inspirational for me to be around other photographers. Like "A Day in the life..." with a twist. There are many stories to be told down there.

I am extremely interested, Andy, if I can find a cheap place to stay. The project sounds good. I'd really enjoy collaborating with you and other LS folks on it. I am happy to talk more about it when you think you have enough people to cover a reasonable set of settings, people, etc.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Basically it would be similar to a workshop situation, there would be a fee to participate to cover organizional costs and my time in putting this together. I would need interns with their own computers as well....I really want to know if this is feasable or even reasonable so I am using the group as a sounding board.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

This could be a really cool three-four day project. If we could find one space to all consolidate, spend a day or two hashing out assignments, spend Mardi Gras shooting, spend the day after reviewing what was shot and giving critiques. I would be happy to donate time for toning images, and chip in a bit to help cover Andy's time and efforts.

It could be a very interesting project, with a touch of workshop. Perhaps November Eleven or other lightstalkers could get such a project in front of some publishers?

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

great idea Andy and LS is a terrific sounding board as well. I particularly like the idea of stories that are radial to the main MG parade story...are you thinking for 2008 or 2009? Plate is full for 2008, but i would definitely be interested in participating and contributing to helping coordinate if this rolls out of the docks for 2009. Though I'm not interested in the "workshop" aspect, I would contribute too (a fee) that goes toward the administrative/coordination costs associated as a participant as I know first hand the amount of time/effort/$$ goes into creating a project ;)). ...

if you are set for 2008, that's lots of logistical madness but absolutely accomplishable. As Nov. 11th, Not Forgotten, Project Azra and FOP Projection initiatives have shown, however, much is possible when the collective LS members get behind it!...

keep me posted...

cheers,
bob

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

<br>I am a a bit tired of the over-sponsored, big-name "day in life" type projects. They're over-homogenized projects that I find less interesting. <br>Andy, I really LIKE YOUR project. It's more of a grassroots-photographers-gettiing-together project that could make for some interesting photographs and possibly a modest book. The photographers chipping in money is fine considering the project. Sponsorship can be good, but a healthy dose of independence never hurt anybody. From the show you put together for the Charlottesville LOOK3 photo festival in June I know you will be an excellent editor. I'll do what I can to help.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Heck, whatever you call it (workshop, collaboration, etc.)I can always learn from colleagues. I am willing to kick in a little jack for common expenses, though by then I won't have a job and don't have "trustafarian" assets for sure. For me the key is whether we can find someplace to stay that is affordable. At Mardi Gras I understand every bed within 20 miles of NOLA suddenly is priced like a four-star hotel. Frankly, I'd be happy to bring a sleeping bag and air mattress if we can find some common space in which to lay it all down (and a nearby toilet). I suspect I've been in much worse places.

And, yes, Andy, if this does not come together maybe we can just party for the whole damn time.

All good ideas.....what would the advantage of a listserve be over a blog? I like the idea of the blog because we can immediately post pictures, as opposed to the yahoo groups which is more thread oriented. Or we possibly might need both.

Anyway, as far as places the rooms, I think that people are going to be able to find places to stay....that isn't an issue. If anyone posts on APAD maybe they can float this idea there as well, the more photogs, the more experienced, the more I can get from local resources here.

I'd love to go, I'm still in school (senior, done soon) and would love to participate if you'd be up for having someone who can shoot (video/audio as well?), but not really pay, outside of travel and living expenses.

http://www.bedandbreakfastcenter.com/worldres.cfm?hotel_id=27165 Try here Neal, and here info@indiahousehostel.com By ands large photographers are a resourceful group, we should be able to come up with couches, spare bedrooms, etc.

Just to clarify, workshops, if any, will be optional and the fee for participation will be more in keeping with the Flying Short Course.

This will be a great chance to meet, party, and do something significant at the same time. There is still an important story to be told here and the dark side of the story here in New Orleans will not be left out of the project.

Well, Andy, I made a cancellable reservation at the Best Western on Magazine arriving on 1/31 and leaving on 2/7. The price was not bad for NOLA at Mardi Gras (I got some discounts), but I am still hoping for something that's cheaper, like a spare bedroom somewhere. I'll keep looking, but that's indicative of my interest in the project. Hope it can all come together, though I suspect most people won't be able to commit for sure until later (me too).

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Thats great Erin.....if people have specific assignment ideas that they want to propose in advance, post them
there. You can reserve your assignments and then we can work together to flesh them out with the help of local interns, and keep people from stepping on each other toes. I will be having researchers here put together specific story assignments
so that the coverage will be broad enough to be meaningful, and we will have an editorial committee to cull out work for
whatever the end product turns out to be- whether a self-published book, Times Picayune essay slideshow, gallery exhibit or all of those. I am not looking for traditional Mardi Gras images, this isn't about beads and tits although there is nothing wrong with either one, but want to do is get past the typical street shots and do smaller stories that speak meaningfully about New Orleans using Mardi Gras as a background. It easy to come and take the predictable shots, and no one will be interested because there is nothing new there. The goal is to get people to expand their vision from the superficial to significant to to help encourage a personal style and vision. Writing is encouraged and there will be writers involved.....

St Vincents Guesthouse on Magazine has 20-30 rooms right now, $125 for two people, with $10 extra for additional bodies if y'all really wanr to get to know each other better. These are the rates for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. All the other days are $69 for two people, and there are parades the whole week before and of course the rest of the city to shoot. We will be having nightly
parties I am sure. St Vincents also has bunkbeds in a co-ed room with two separate bathrooms, if we have enough interest in that we can reserve the whole room that fits up to 20 people. I will continue checking around for other deals.

i mean, i doubt we all mind sleeping on floors, right?

i've done that before when covering protests, and it's worked well.
hotels are just too damn expensive.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Hey Andy
Great Idea
I think it might be worth looking into sponsors
Canon and Nikon come to mnd but so does Sandisk and Lexar
It would be an incentive to get the sponsors to put up some of their product
and it would be a great way for them to get recognition and reach their core audienc.

In addition I think you should propose this to magazines\everyone from Stern to Smithsonian
certainly can pitch it to TIME and NEWSWEEK BUT NOT SURE THEY WOULD BITE
see if you can drum up interest from foreign mags into looking at this.
I am sure you can get good response if you have some significant photographers on this site interested in the project.
Finally I would extend it to multimedia as well
I like the way you are thinking in terms of reserving assignments
I do think you will need producers and editors to smooth the process and so the shooters ( especially the relatively new ones can get feedback and improve their abilities. The biggest thing will be coordination.
Sounds like a great project using the Mardi Gras  as a lens to examine the recovery of New Orleans;
Let me know if I can help JC

I"m still mulling over the idea of driving to NO on the friday before mardi gras. Anyone interested in leaving from NYC? For those of you who are flying, how are you going to deal with ground transportation once you're there? I'd also be interested in sharing a house rental for the week.

Has anyone thought about applying for some small grants? I'll have a look around, but I think the deadline will be too tight for most of the funding opportunities I know about.

I like others may may elect to drive down. Someone I work with who is a native of NOLA says it's a 16-hour drive, breaking the trip at Knoxville (I remember some country song about goin' to Knoxville!). Sandra (my most wonderful wife) may come along, but I may have a couple of other seats. Putnam might have first dibs on one of them, if he gets his a** in gear to come. But there might be another available. PM or e-mail me if you are interested in catching a ride from DC.

Neal here are the approximate driving times and alternate airport locations. Baton Rogue has lots of flights and is only an hour from New Orleans. Biloxi, MS is an hour away as well and has flights. Mobile, AL is only four hours away. Birmingham, AL is a five hour drive. Atlanta is an eight hour drive. Memphis is a six hour drive or their is Amtrak service to New Orleans. There is also Amtrak from Chicago. Houston is a five hour drive. Dallas is closer to eight. <br> Driving from NYC is about 18 hours and two days for one driver, or one day for two drives.

Brian, the shooting days are what you want to put into it. I hope to have someplace we all can work out of, hang out, show
pictures centrally located, for around two weeks, at least that is the plan.
The events are in the planning stage, but I expect a few to be the week before the
holiday. From Friday night to Fat Tuesday we will have regular parties, but the
serious work needs to be done the week before.....the Ninth Ward and all of that.

On travel, the train to NOLA can, I am told, be a real hoot. An old-style bluesman duo I know from the DC area went down from here on the train to the NOLA Jazz and Blues Festival a few years ago, and they said the musicians collectively took over the club car, playing essentially nonstop from here to NOLA. From Chicago, on the other hand, I think the Amtrak train is still called "The City of New Orlean," as in "...ridin' on the City of New Orleans...."

but, any story on food Bill, particuarly in NO where food both unites and divides the city (often along culture/economic lines), the KingCake story would be interesting: i mean, i still have never seen a good story about bakers in NO...cooks/chefs/mama-papa joints/po boys, hell yea, but KingCakes...or a variation for Bill: the eating rituals of various people pre/post parade...i used to know a girl from NO whose mom was a baker and she'd spend months preparing for 2 thinks: MardiGras kinkcakes and t-giving turduckens......i already can see b/w grainy shots of the cakes being made, sweat over, swallowed and transported......

ok, im getting bummed ;)))...good luck y'all :))

Another story idea: Juxtaposing the different types of celebrations that go on among the classes in NO for Mardi Gras. What do the rich and powerful do to celebrate compared to the 9th ward-esque areas (black tie vs. barbecue?) It might be difficult to get access to the high-class affairs but I think that if we started now we might be able to arrange a way in, they already have event photographers no doubt, what's one more?

Yes, these ideas are great. As far as the housing goes, please make tentative reservations but I expect there
will be that things are likely to change quickly.....so do not commit money to hotel reservations that
you are not able to change if a better deal emerges later. Erin, as far as the house goes I would ask you to wait on that
as I may be headed in a similar direction and at this point splitting resources would just make it more
difficult to get this off the ground. There is still lots of time.

Hi Andy, Hi All

Really good idea, I’m extremely interested in participating in this photographic project. I was in New Orleans for the last three weeks for the first time. I am interested in returning over Mardi-Gras to work on a project with the Mardi-Gras Indians. I attended the seasons first practice last Sunday on Dryades street. It was an amazing experience. I look forward to learning more about this project. Please keep in touch and good luck.
I would love to be involved in this group project by shooting this specific Mardi-Gras story.

All the best,

Benedicte

Also, I think The Saint Vincent guest house in Magazine street could be an ideal place for photographers to stay, because of the location and possibilities to all stay together They have 75 rooms and a big salon to organize meetings.
It’s also cheap (I paid 250 dollars for a week. for a big room with 2 double beds = 4 persons.)
Really nice, free coffee, internet wireless and with a swimming-pool !!!

Sounds like a great idea, but I also agree with the "less workshop" approach . Excellent idea to put a book together as well.
In fact, this could become some sort of an international inspiration for different mega festivals around the world.

Johnny, we are structuring this as a photographic event, not as a workshop. But there may be workshops
available to those who want them, as well as formal or informal portfolo reviews. I would like to get David Burnett or Anthony Suau, maybe Chris Morris, to come down here and either give a presentation or
just be there if some of you want to talk to them informally. I would like to have Sylvia Plachy as well maybe a David Friend.....all dependent on how this plays out.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Andy, this is a great idea, and I´m interested in joining in a collective effort to portray what´s going on in New Orleans. I think renting a house, sleeping on floors, sharing the kitchen, etc. sounds like a good way to go. I think we could cover a lot of ground as a group in a few days, even starting before and after the Big Bash, to document preparations, aftermath, etc. might be a good idea for those interested.

I just have to mention the tragic events in Villahermosa, Tabasco, which are similar, though probably even more severe that what New Orleans has suffered. REconstruction there will be even more problematic. For those who don´t know, Villahermosa is the capital of the State of Tabasco, Mexico, which has been completely flooded for about a week now. People are blaming a combination of climate change and corruption-negligence.

I´ll be watching to see how things develop on this project. I´d love to join in.

OK, just to let you know what is happening here. I have a meeting with the Times-Picayune this week. I
have also looked at a large space in the Quarter that to run the project out of for two weeks, I am waiting
on some numbers. Jay Colton has offered to help us out with some corporate partnership possibilities. and
Karen Mullarkey, former picture editor of Newsweek has will be advising me on how to set up the picture editing
part of the project. Karen will probably work on the project in some capacity but has some limitations as
she is recovering from a knee replacement-- ouch. Anyway, more next week. Please pass the word I am going to
need everyone's help to make this work, its more complex and expensive than one might expect.

Jonathan, there will be lots to do and shoot for those ten days, but most of the organizational work
is going to have to happen before that. As I envision it, when the photographers show up we
are going to have a working space, assignments, and parties all lined up and ready to go. I will
need someone who really knowns FTP to set up a mechanism for the photog to upload and the
editors to download......so if there is an FTP guru out there raise your hand.

Could we get the Digital Railroad to help? David Alan Harvey got their support for a mechanism to manage his portfolio review / fellowship contest. Several hundred people have uploaded 20-40 images each, so I gather the arrangement can handle a large volume of disparate uploaders.

Preston, although I had considered DR, with a large group of photographers, Mullarkey's thought is an FTP server would be more efficient, although if Evan is interested I am all ears. :) Basically we need a way for you to deliver your pics, and a way for the editors/editorial team to cull them down.....all the IPTC data, and captioning would be done by the photographers. Its not really that big a deal. I may ask photographers to team together to edit each others stuff before the
FTP process starts. In any case, we are only looking for the best images 10-20 from each day, the really'good ones
aren't hard to find.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

There is a local lab that will develop tri-x and scan at $25. a roll with overnight service, and there are bw darkroom rentals here for d&c and contacting, but we will have to figure out the scanning end. So film is not impossible, in fact I absolutely want to encourage it. In the short term it will be tougher for film photogs but if there is a gallery show nothing beats a silver gelatin, and then there is that film "feel" that can't be beat.
<br>As far as the placement goes its too early to tell by hopefully we can get a publishing partner like
Mediastorm to work with us. I believe that this Mardi Gras will be a watershed event in the recovery of
New Orleans, the first Mardi Gras after Katrina to have some semblence of normality. At the same time we
can't forget that tens of thousands are still struggling to rebuild, to return, and to restore some semblence of
normality to their lives. Some areas of the city are scarred by the endemic poverty that created the atmosphere
for Katrina and its aftermath. So there is very much of a story here to be told and I expect that our team
of photographers will do it grandly, in a way that would be of interest to Mediastorm or something of that ilk.
I think that we already have a good group and it will only get better over time.

I think PhotoShelter could be a good option. They have the multi-user agency facility and previously they offered to waive<br/> the $50 set-up fee for an LS related endeavor that didn't materialize. I could sound them out on it. They would probably be <br/>interested given that they have just launched the Collection and would delight in the potential publicity most likely. What say you?<br/>It's a brilliant interface and might be perfect for this, what with their intuitive lightbox and gallery functionality.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

A little belated in my reply but quite interested none the less, been following this thread since inception. I should be back in the US the first week of Feb so if the logistics work out I would love to take part in documenting a little slice of New Orleans life. Put 'em all together and make one sexy Mardi Gras pizza pie. Word!

Personally, to take part the living costs would have to be fairly low. A house rental split many ways would be cool or a hotel room octupled up could also do... Worst comes to worst, a pair of bolt cutters and a sleeping bag goes a long way. Local locker storage + a wifi signal and we're golden. The LS Squat NOLA, people would be talking for years :) But before worst comes to worst, lets keep the search for some legal, low-priced accommodations going. No one wants to deal with the hassle of being locked up and unable to shoot for the day if it can be avoided for a reasonable monetary exchange.

Andy: Whether or not Im able to attend the event, I'd be more than happy to help out where I can. Im not sure what I can offer on this end but i'll be in Montreal for a little while and back in NYC for a few days before leaving the country again, if theres any ground work or organization thats needs doing 'round these parts drop me a line. Also I dont mind pimping the project to the local University students, maybe we could get a few interns looking for experience in this kind of thing. I dont know how many would be able to do everything pro-bono but if transport costs could be figured in, im sure I could find a few heads willing to help out. I'll scout some local galleries as well, obviously nothing can be secured without the work to show but I'll hit up some contacts to keep the idea fresh for when the goods are ready. Keep in touch.

Fifteen years ago I was a photographer on Day in the Life of Ireland and have since then regretted not having had the chance to get involved in any similar projects. I'd love to be included if I can get over the costs hurdle. It will cost me a lot just getting to New Orleans from Dublin, Ireland, where I am now based.

Met with Mark, JF, Preston, Jonathan, (excuse me if I forget any names, I know that I did) at Toads got
some ideas going. One thing I came away with is that folks want a definite end product, and
that will be addressed in a website that I hope to roll out with Micah next week. Micah and Neal have been tremendously
supportive, and Neal really stepped up with very strong advice that comes from a lot of organizational
experience....thanks and lets keep plugging away.

Hey Andy,
I'd love to get down there if my schedule permits. My Mother-in-law lives in Arabi so I have some pretty good connections in St. Bernard Parish. She is dating a shrimper from "down the road" in Shell Beach which I'd love to cover. I've done a few stories down there and know a lot of the town folk.
BTW: If you're ever around Betsy's Pancake House on Canal, ask for Sharon. She my Mother in law and is waitress there.
Best of luck with the project!
Cheers

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Andy, I assume we will keep this to NOLA and the surrounding parishes, but if you want to expand it, I have a lot of contacts up in the Cajun Prairie...Lafayette, Eunice, Mamou, Breaux Bridge, etc. They do a different Mardis Gras up there -- very country and unpretentious, and oriented to music and food. I have not been there during Mardi Gras but my friends say it's wild.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Neal, the consensus is that we want to do the country Mardi Gras too, it will add another dimension to
the project. Just to fill folks in, we are putting together a proposal and a dummy to present to
publishers in advance of the project. Our intent is to create a book from the week's work, and that could
take many different shapes depending on the support we can get from sponsors, the photographers that commit to
coming down, etc. If we don't get an offer in advance than we will make a dummy and present it after
the fact. The more shooters the better. The more we can direct the shooters toward specific stories, the
better. This is a sneak peak at the website that is "underconstruction."

I'm no stranger to 'BIG MAMOU!' I've gotten to know a number of the locals there well. If I don't go to New Orleans, this will be my fifth year to shoot at Mamou; it's become a pet project for me. I would love to incorporate it somehow into this project if you see a fit.

And like Neal says, there are other very interesting places like Eunice and Ville Platte that have little similarity to what happens in New Orleans.

Well, Lance, you probably have more contacts up there than I do, but I'd love work that region if it is to be included. In fact I'd love to work with you jointly to dig out some hitherto unknown prairie stories. I suppose I would miss the big party in NOLA, but, alas, art has its price. I have always found the Creole elements of the black communities up there (that brought us Zydeco music) to be a riddle, not widely explained. One potential contact is a guy at LU-Lafayette who teaches folk culture, and I think he could he help the project focus on some new stories to tell about the folks up there.

Hi Andy and everyone,
I have been MIA for the past few weeks and I just came across this thread.
I plan to continue working on my Katrina Project this Mardi Gras and I would be honored to participate--count me in.

I have spent many nights as a tenant at the St. Vincent Guest house--it's just fine and there is a good coffee house with wi-fi across the street and the worlds best burritos at Juan's just down the street.

I'm not sure if you still need material to show potential sponsors-- you can see some of my work on my website < www.chrisusher.com > and if you have 11 minutes to kill you can see a final cut show of this work at < www.chrisusher.com/clients/OneOfUs/OneOfUs.mov >.

Let me know if there is anything I might be able to help with.

Cheers, Chris

When Chris isn't busy photographing, he spends time in court battling Corbis over lost photographs. Recently, it was ruled in his favor and against Corbis that they did indeed loose 12,500+ photographs of Chris' images. <br>Post-Katrina in NOLA has become a serious personal project for Chris and he's spent a lot of time there. Having his participation will be great.<br>Looks like things are rolling, Andy.

John, yes, as I recall Chris has worked extensively there for TIME. We are going to have a very solid group and I expect to see a lot of fantastic images out of this--this will be a great chance for young shooters to show what they can do and compete against some of the more established shooters. I am talking with Tony Suau, and if someone has a number for David
Alan Harvey, I would really like to get David shooting on this project.....

cc: from email reply
Hey there,

I am Michele Cohen, photojournalist of course and saw your post on LS.

I've already queried my photographer friend who works for the Washington Post, he stayed in a rented house in New Orleans right after Katrina paid for by the Post.

Perhaps all 40 of us could pitch in a nominal amount to rent this house? We'd have a central location with all the necessary amenities, kitchen, bath, Internet, sleeping and a great meeting space to discuss the evolution of this project every day.

Say, for example it was something like $100 each (that's pretty good for 4 days) and we could cook meals together to save on food costs...

This would be much better than being disjointed across the city with all it's possible transportation issues, etc...

Better as a complete team effort on every level...

Cheers!

negotiating on the studio on Bienville and Royal in the Quarter and I have talked with the head of the
nolaphotoalliance a non-profit that is helping photographers after Katrina and is dedicated to
making New Orleans a center for photography. I am suggesting that the Alliance function as our
partner in any sales of the material produced, and we will help fund the group, which is open
to anyone. They have agreed in principle. Next week I will have a complete mission statement for prospective
sponsors, who I think, should be delighted to participate in at his project.

isn't about competition its about working together, and helping people out at the same time. Not just by

creating a meaningful document, hopefully a book at the same time.

I'm very very keen to come over from Ireland to take part, but because the flights are going to cost the best part of $1000 I would really like the rest of my participation to be relatively cheap. Is it likely that there is going to be accommodation available at very good rates (Irish for free gratis) and is bicycle really the best option for traveling around once I'm there? Is car rental reasonably priced and what is the traffic like?

The buzz will be fabulous. I worked on one of the Day in The Life books, others amongst you have worked on numerous, and some, like Andy are veterans of many, and it's the most truly wonderful experience.

I'm an experienced chef, but whilst I'd be happy to muscle in I'd rather not be chained to a stove for my entire stay.

Interesting that all the volunteer cooks are men. Does this prove the old saw (from Escoffier?) that food is too important to be left to women? (he says, dodging shoes, eggs, tomatoes and other objects flying toward him from female arms).

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Yea Andrea! I wondered how long it would take to get a rise out of somebody. :-) I actually expect that there will be a lot of decent cooks on board. The secret will be to organize our resources so we can all shoot and those who want to show off their cooking can get a chance there too. Food is serious business in NOLA, so we should plan to conform to the local priorities!

Andy and I have talked a bit about who comes and how many, and, as I understand it from Andy, all serious photographers will be welcome. It will be a great opportunity for less experienced photogs to learn from more experienced ones. I suppose that if we end up with a thousand people wanting to shoot, some different decisions might have to be made. But I hope it would not be to exclude the students. My personal view would be to pair the student and other less experienced shooters with some more experienced ones, but that's just my idea. Andy's ideas as expressed to me are to make this very democratic, and I know he sees the advantage of a genuine diversity of eyes looking for images. Including students would actually benefit that diversity.

I love that there are so many offers to cook... but I gotta tell ya, if you're not eating the local food while in Louisiana then you are missing out on half the trip!! Crawfish on butcher paper, a bowl of gumbo, jumbalaya, and an Abita (or six) with the sounds of Zydeco swirling through the smells that I can describe as nothing but 'Cajun-Creole'. You'll never forget it!

Yes, Lance, you are indeed correct. There's a hell a lot of great food to eat when you are in Louisiana -- it's a religion there. And for the less initiated, an Abita is a NOLA-area beer, even though it does sound like it came from South Asia!

My notion of joint cooking is to create some community experiences and save some jack for all. But it would indeed be a big mistake to eat in all the time (even if we could arrange the logistics).

I've put this on my calendar and am looking forward to the trip. It's right before my trip to the Southern Short Course which is perfect.
I have comfortable vehicle for which I could share a ride with 2-3 photographers and gear on the way down.

Andy and I in our conversations have been thinking that we may well have to charge participants something to cover some of the group and organizational costs (including something for Andy's organizational time, of which he is currently spending a ton). Of course this depends on whether he is able to find a sponsor that can cover those costs, which may be a little hard in NOLA whose economy ain't exactly rocking. We don't know how much, or even that it will be necessary. But perhaps we could get a reaction on this point (assume it is not a lot of money, like maybe a hundred or two). Thoughts?

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

I am not opposed to the idea of some compensation for those putting in the enormous amount of time to set this up, or for those
staying at the "community house", whatever shape that takes, to pay for the space, but to make all those wishing to participate pay a fee seems off to me. If there is a real mentor program for students, that also seems reasonable to charge some sort of fee. But if people are spending their time and money to come down and offer their take on the subject, it does not seem right to charge for that.
If there is a need to offer a donation for the space for us all the show the daily take in, that also reasonable and to be expected with this many people involved. Hopefully a sponsor can be found for the logistics and people can offer what they can for the spaces.
I am open to all ideas, but this is my first impression.

Thats a great idea. I think we will allow established pros to come in as mentors, and waive
the fee. This would be subject to space limitations and would require a resume and portfolio.....
if we can generate enough money from sponsors I will find a way to get you some coin. Certainly you
would fall in that category Jeremy.

My first trip to NOLA will be the week of Marti Gras and would like to participate any way I can. My original plan was to try to find a way to photograph the city but this could give me an opportunity for a project I wouldn't have thought of. I won't need a place to stay.

Here some thoughts on assignment ideas: As mentioned above the main themes are Marti Gras/Katrina/Culture one place they all come together is Food. We normally think of what is on the table, who is eating, but the one place where all of these connect is in the kitchens of the restaurants and homes. Food preparation for and during the big parade and even smaller events could be interesting. We would need to be sensitive to people who don't want their photos taken and need to stay out of the way.

Andy and everyone,
Thanks for the kudos on the site. It really couldn't gotten done the way it did without the help of Christopher Guess, Neal and Andy.

Everyone else, I just wanted to point you all to the forums section on the site. Just go to http://www.mardigras360degrees.org/home/forums - This is a great place to discuss all sorts of logistical things for the event as well as come up with assignment ideas and list local resources.

Of course I encourage everyone to continue this discussion thread here, but if you want to list something, please add it to our forums so everyone (non-LS included) can see it.

I believe that you have to register for the website to participate in the forums (though that may be changed soon) but it is a simple process- just click register on the forums page and follow the steps.

This will also help us to capture your email addresses so we can send you email updates.

Thanks everyone for all your input and support. I am really looking forward to making this a photo event like no other!

Hi all, I posted info on the 'Indian House' hostel on the new website. I just spoke with them. Here is what I posted.

I called today, and found out that you can only book on line, you can see what rooms/dorms are avaliable…seems male dorms are sold out for the main Mardi Gras dates.

The prices go from $17.00 a night/dorm until Feb 1, and than they are $25 .00…a night/ per person

Private rooms vary- but the highest I believe is $75.00. starting at $35.00....
People have made some cancellations, but of course it’s a very busy time…

You can get all the info online.

possibilities for fee reduction that some of you may be eligible for......check the site for that as well.

When are people thinking of coming down? I want to be able to give a full effort to this project, but I am having to take vacation from my job, so I can't be down there forever. Looking for a good balance.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Pretty amazing, I floated this idea 45 days ago and look where we are now......its still a balancing act, but I think we are headed in the right direction. Since this is aimed at a broad range of photographers its going to take a bit of
tweaking to get the formula right, for this and for future projects here in New Orleans and elsewhere. I am continually going back to Neal and talking with others about structuring the fees in a way that is fair, and at the same time to encourage
everyone to participate. We want to show great photography and support the community.

Brian, I would definitely be here by monday the 28th, but if you can come earlier do so-- all of this will be educational, with a lot of party.......really, you can't miss.

Hey Laurent, Shelly Katz has volunteered to come down with some fancy printers, large sheets of papers and
all the ink he needs for hundreds of gorgeous prints, so we are hoping to make quite a show out of this.

I just want to throw in my two cents here and say that I think this is shaping up to be a great project and an opportunity not to miss. The collaboration will be very energizing and I'm really looking forward to it!

If anyone is on the fence, I would say "Go". Call or email Andy if you're unsure about anything and I think you'll get excited about this, too.

A collaboration/workshop in New Orleans at any time would be fantastic, but especially around Mardi Gras... it's an integral pulse of the soul of this iconic and wounded city.

Re: Your Input Wanted: Shoot Mardi Gras in New Orleans

We have confirmed a lot of the schedule for the project so I would like to share that with you. We will be running the project out of the McKenna Museum for African American Art in the Lower Garden District. There is a comfortable room with couches and wi-fi which will be perfect for people to gather and to go over each others
work, and we will have a projector for folks to share work when there is not a formal presentation or workshop going on. The printing and the exhibition will be downtown in the Gallery at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation offices. Our show will run from February 6th through March. In addition, at the suggest of Laurent Zylberman, who was very helpful in a meeting with me last week, we will have a projection of the photographers work on the evening of the February 6th, Ash Wednsday, before our closing party.

So the bottom line is that you should definitely stay through the 6th of February and you should try to arrive as early the week before as you can. We are trying to schedule the most important events from January 31st through the 6th, but our base at the McKenna will be open from January 28th on, and if any of you are here we can start our informal seeions and projections then. So its up to you how much time you want to spend, but I suggest you stay through the 6th and arrive as early the week before as you can.

Early Friday evening we will be having a studio party at the workshop of Chrisopher Porche-West, a master photographer and craftsman who has made a niche for himself in the art scene here. This will be early enough for those of you who want to get out to shoot the big parades or other stories around town

Just to make it clear, we are not just looking to shoot the party. This is about creating a picture of New Orleans two years after the storm and I am going to try to point you in the right direction to make compelling pictures that have a value beyond this particular project/workshop. I believe that New Orleans is the biggest story in America today and it is going to be so for quite a while. After biking around town today and seeing huge swaths of the city still boarded up, so many broken down houses, some mere facades almost falling down, its hard to imagine that progress is really made. Yet progress is still being made.

As far as the fees go, we are trying as hard as possible to make this affordable for you. We know that its going to cost you money to get here and to stay, and that for a first effort, we picked a difficult time, and started late-- too late to get the six figure sponsorships that other workshops get. Karen Mullarkey has donated her time to come down here.

We are raising money to make that happen and to not rely of fees. Ric Smolan, Jennifer Erwitt, and Doug Menuez have generously donated towards Karen's trip here. Shelly Katz has likewise donated his time to print your show. I can't tell you what Shelly charges, but it is a lot, and he is bring thousands of dollars in ink and paper with him. But the bottom line is we need your support on this.

As far as the housing, I am going to go out on a limb as say that I will guarantee that I can find affordable housing for you of some sort, even if it means your having to buy a $30 blow up mattress at Walmart and sleeping on the floor. Bring blankets, it can get cool here in February and if you have a car drive-- there are some assignments that you will really want to wheels.

For those of you who have already registered I greatly appreciate your support, if we can make this a success I already have plans for a series of 100eyes projects in the future--all of these dealing with important social issues in areas of the country and the world that are on the fault lines of change. I hope you can be part of them.

Preston, I was having the same problem.. if you click on your _filtering_ (to the right of your name on LS homepage once you've logged in), change it to "Unfiltered" and all the posts will then appear. I think some changes like this took place during the recent maintenance/downtime. Cheers, Lance
