The Nikon D2X blows!

If I never use the D2X again it will be too soon. I stuck with the Nikon gear hoping this new flagship would come close to the level of Canon cameras... but seriously. For a $4,000 camera it doesnt hold up. Ive been using it in Iraq where after a few weeks of relatively clean enviornment it fires off 12-13 shots everytime I turn the camera on. And images shot at 400 ISO are super grainy. Auto focus is weak, back focusing often. And the exposure is a lot different than the metering system Nikon used on the D1X.
Anyone else have similar complaints or gripes?
Maybe I just have a shitty one.

Ben

been having rather good luck with my D2X- but sometimes the focus is a bit suspect- might need to have a look at your lenses, seems they are the biggest bottle neck- a fingerprint on a lense filter will smudge your image significantly!

Re: The Nikon D2X blows!

Regarding the grainy 400 asa stuff...I don't use Nikon gear but if you have any camera JPEG processing parameters like 'sharpness on', you should turn them off as it will give you artifacting and 'graininess' you just don't need - you can always sharpen in Photoshop.

You can also try shooting some Raw files and comparing them to Jpegs. if the images are still looking rough, it'll be the chip.

The camera shooting frames off when you turn it on sounds like you have a lemon. Is there any way of re-installing or updating the camera firmware?

If you have no alternative but to use the camera, you can try shooting Raw to get as much quality out of the chip as you can (but it will be more processing work), or going on the net and buying noise reduction software like Noise Ninja, Quantum Mechanic or the Fred Miranda Noise Reducer Plugin

http://www.fredmiranda.com/shopping/Xmpro

For 20 bucks it's got to be worth a look. I've always found his stuff useful and good value.

I had similar problems with my D2Hs. It was worse though in that when I turned the camera off the shutter fired like I had the motor drive hammmered down and the AF quit all together. I sent it back to Nikon and asked for a new body (it wasn't even a month old), but they insisted a repair. It took a while to get back, but they fixed the problem ad covered all my shipping expenses. Unortunately that doesn't help you much in Iraq.
My D2X is the best camera I have ever owned. I upgraded from the D1X. It sounds like there is something wrong with the camera you received. My D2X at 400 ISO shows no grain at all. Actually, I find it hard to find any grain at 800 with my D2X.
Good luck.

I just got my D2X today, with the new 17-55. Shot my first assignment with it in low light. Zero back focus. I hope that doesn't change. The only thing I've ever heard bad about the D2X before your post was the difficulty setting the manual white balance.

Love to see some images to scrutinize if you can! I have been shooting D2X for about 6 months now, shot D70 before that and 35mm and MF film before that. So far I have been highly impressed. So, perhaps the grainyness is a difference in "opinion"! I'll show you mine if you show me yours!
Ben---Remember when the film and the sharpness of the lens was all that matters. Well now th camera is the film as well and Nikon sucks. This is coming from a Nikon lifer. I've spent the last two weeks using Canon of the US Open and now on the UN. The Nikon is at least a 2/3 of a stop darker at the same ISO and exposure and the noise is ridiculous. The first chance I get after this week I am dumping this Nikon crap and never looking back.
Ben-- For me the straw that broke the camel's back wad the promise from Nikon that they would send me a D2X on Monday to test only to never have it come and then for them to tell me that they could not send me one. I'm not even a CPS member, but they lent me a ton of stuff during the US Open. I have ton of Nikon gear and considered some of the people pals. I hate to see how they treat a bad customer.

If sponsorship is a concern, anything Nikon haves Canon would be more than happy to take away.
To those who would like to see a comparison of the D2X at 320, and the EOS 1Ds Mark II, email me for a link. I too recently bought Canon's after being with Nikon for over a decade. While I will be keeping my Nikon's for work at 100-200 iso, and for lens sharpness, for the noise at 400 and above, it's DEFINATELY Canon. When I shot the same image and overlayed one ontop of another, the difference in noise between the two was sickening.
alex majoli is an italian magnum photographer, often works for newsweek.....also Paolo Pellegrin uses an olympus but the reason, as far as he says, is that he likes the colors !
I have been working with the D2X for the last six months and I have also found it grainy and with a lot of digital noise in the shades, but by increasing the contrast it actually changes a lot, that's the way I like it anyway with more contrast
there is a great problem with the rubber ... i have changed it twice already and even lost some bits which came off while I was running during a demonstration, fortunately for a year the nikon service repair it for free
Re: The Nikon D2X blows!

My story: broke three Nikon shutters in five years; every lens I put on my D1hs produced wildly different exposures; focus always seemed to jump during peak action in sports; every function had to be switched to manual because the camera couldn't be trusted.

Bought a 1D Mark II a few months ago... nearly every image from sporting events are in focus; lenses seem sharper, and they focus and track faster than Nikons; rubber exterior doesn't fall off; exposure and color are fantastic.

That said, I was disappointed to discover that Canons do not match up to Nikons ergonomically. Nikons are designed so you can focus on shooting without having to look up to find buttons. By contrast, many Canon functions require two hands and your eye away from the viewfinder, which I find distracts from shooting.

I switched from Nikon to Canon one year ago, after 14 years as a Nikon user. Was a great, great move for me. Was using the Nikon D1X and D2H. Canon IDMK2 and 20D blow them both out of the water.

As Keith so aptly pointed out, when using digital, the camera is so much more important these days than in film days.

And so, to those who don't care for this thread. Spare me, go away. Nothing wrong with trading information, or even complaining about gear. It's the tool we use to make our living, for chrissakes.

That guy's name is Petar. He's from Serbia. His street name is Santiago. Quite a character. Thanks for clearing that up. Glad you like the shot. It was for a picture column called "What They Were Thiking" which they killed last year, unfortunately.
