I stuck with the Nikon gear hoping this new flagship would come close to the level of Canon cameras... but seriously. For a $4,000 camera it doesnt hold up. Ive been using it in Iraq where after a few weeks of relatively clean enviornment it fires off 12-13 shots everytime I turn the camera on. And images shot at 400 ISO are super grainy. Auto focus is weak, back focusing often. And the exposure is a lot different than the metering system Nikon used on the D1X. Anyone else have similar complaints or gripes? Maybe I just have a shitty one. Mon, 12 Sep 2005 05:55:32 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/posts/the-nikon-d2x-blows#7540 Regarding the grainy 400 asa stuff...I don't use Nikon gear but if you have any camera JPEG processing parameters like 'sharpness on', you should turn them off as it will give you artifacting and 'graininess' you just don't need - you can always sharpen in Photoshop. You can also try shooting some Raw files and comparing them to Jpegs. if the images are still looking rough, it'll be the chip. The camera shooting frames off when you turn it on sounds like you have a lemon. Is there any way of re-installing or updating the camera firmware? If you have no alternative but to use the camera, you can try shooting Raw to get as much quality out of the chip as you can (but it will be more processing work), or going on the net and buying noise reduction software like Noise Ninja, Quantum Mechanic or the Fred Miranda Noise Reducer Plugin http://www.fredmiranda.com/shopping/Xmpro For 20 bucks it's got to be worth a look. It was worse though in that when I turned the camera off the shutter fired like I had the motor drive hammmered down and the AF quit all together. I sent it back to Nikon and asked for a new body (it wasn't even a month old), but they insisted a repair. It took a while to get back, but they fixed the problem ad covered all my shipping expenses. Bought a 1D Mark II a few months ago... nearly every image from sporting events are in focus; lenses seem sharper, and they focus and track faster than Nikons; rubber exterior doesn't fall off; exposure and color are fantastic. That said, I was disappointed to discover that Canons do not match up to Nikons ergonomically. Nikons are designed so you can focus on shooting without having to look up to find buttons. By contrast, many Canon functions require two hands and your eye away from the viewfinder, which I find distracts from shooting.
