Why is the entry fee for the PDN Photo annual so high? They get content and the prize money is put up by their sponcors. The World Press Photo contest is free and there is no limit to the amount photos one can submit. We should contact PDN Project Manager, John Gimenez, jgimenez@pdnonline.com (646) 654-5792 for an answer. I emailed him but got no reply.

You pay them $45 for rights to your photograph for 12 months, winner or not. What a temptation...

Funny thing is I had already written to them about the fee a little earlier this afternoon. I hope that more of you do likewise. Unfortunately, I may just have to succumb and pay the fee. I really need the exposure that placing well might afford me. I think I have a strong enough website, finally, to submit. At least I made my complaint to them. Paulyman.

It's definitely not serious a "contest" that takes into consideration the amount of money you have in your pocket as one of the basic elements when "judging" what should be the best photographic work of the year. These prizes are fancy, but totally meaningless. If you win, ok, good for you, but I don't give a damn (or my congratulations).

Lube downloaded, I just bent over and forked my hard earned dinero... I guess I got no right to complain, if I paid it.... (one category all I could stupidly afford) But I feel even stupider than stupid right now. Im actually surprised there isn't more flack being shot their way from LS, given that we are being pretty fucking stupid and paying somebody to hopefully, maybe publish our work. Pretty stupidly ridiculous if you ask me. Sorry to plagiarize your name Stupid, but I think we all who paid it are being just as stupid as you.

It seems that Shots Mag will rouse to anger even those guys that see in publishing for free (or for "visibility") a fair trade. Or Shots will simply raise the bar. It's our call...

Obviously, but if it were free or say, $5 an image, people are going to enter a lot more that might not make the cut if the fees were say $25.

Perhaps, When I first got onto flickr I bought a pro account because I thought I would need it but I only keep around two hundred photos on at any one time because more then that is too much for anyone to care about (so is two hundred really but the nature of tagging makes it a little easier to search) Self moderation is an important skill for a photographer that will need to put portfolios together et cetera. They should just tell you "five photos only", putting a price on additional photos is like playing the lottery. What is it, an exhibition of excellence in photography, or yet another lotto scam?
