Surnommé sans surprise le Viking par ses camarades, Sven Näckstrand s'est éteint entouré des siens dans un hôpital d'Uppsala en Suède. La maladie diagnostiquée en juillet dernier a emporté de façon foudroyante cet homme toujours souriant qui paraissait si solide. Le calme, le courage, la rigueur professionnelle et la modestie étaient ses traits les plus marquants. "Je n'ai jamais vu quelqu'un d'aussi zen. Je ne l'ai jamais vu s'énerver", se souvient Patrick Anidjar, l'actuel directeur du bureau de Jérusalem pour l'AFP et qui a travaillé avec lui à leurs débuts en Israël. Né le 8 décembre 1949 en Suède, Sven Näckstrand se retrouve au tout début des années 80 soldat de la force de l'Onu déployée dans le Sinaï après les accords de Camp David. Passionné de photo, il va en faire son métier en Israël, d'abord à l'agence Gamma puis à l'AFP à partir de 1985. Ses clichés qui feront le tour du monde vont témoigner de l'histoire tumultueuse de la région: les deux Intifada (1987 et 2000), la première Guerre du Golfe, les négociations de paix israélo-arabes en Israël et à Washington, les accords de paix avec la Jordanie, l'assassinat du Premier ministre Yitzhak Rabin à Tel Aviv en novembre 1995. En 2003, il décide de regagner son pays natal où l'AFP lui offre de devenir le responsable de la photo pour la région nordique. Sven Näckstrand change alors son appareil photo d'épaule pour des événéments sportifs, notamment le ski, et les sujets magazines. Très proche de sa famille, Sven était marié depuis 32 ans avec Gila. Unsurprisingly called the Viking by his comrades, Sven Näckstrand died surrounded in a hospital at Uppsala in Sweden. The disease diagnosed last July struck down this man who was always smiling and appeared so solid. Calm, courage, professional rigour and modesty were his most outstanding features. "I never saw somebody so Zen. I never saw him to be irritated," remembers Patrick Anidjar, the current director of the AFP Jerusalem office and who worked with him at the beginning of their careers in Israel. Born on December 8, 1949 in Sweden, Sven Näckstrand spent the beginning of the Eighties as a soldier of the UN force deployed in the Sinai after the Camp David agreements. Impassioned photographer, he made his trade in Israel, initially at the Gamma agency then with AFP since 1985. His "cliches" (iconic images?) which turned the world testify to the tumultuous history of the area: two Intifadas (1987 and 2000), the first Gulf War, negotiations of peace in Israel and in Washington, agreement of peace with Jordan, the assassination of the Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in Tel Aviv in November 1995. In 2003, he decided to return to his native land where AFP offered him to become photo bureau chief for the Scandinavian area. Sven Näckstrand then changed his camera on his shoulder for sporting events, in particular skiing, and magazine subjects. Very close to his family, Sven had been married for 32 years with Gila.
