For a number of years Eastern Canadian photojournalists were forced to travel West or into the United States to participate in workshops and seminars.

A heated debate on the ECNPA's bulletin board in 2001 on what could be done to educate photojournalists locally resulted in a small group of vocal members being volunteered to create a workshop for the East.

Great White North was suggested out of jest, after the great Canadian McKenzie Brothers, and it stuck before the committee realized it. The Great White North Workshop was on it's way to becoming a reality.

Learning as they went, the committee managed to secure fantastic speakers and workshop leaders with strong Canadian and International content.

The first Great White North Workshop was well attended by photojournalists from Ontario and Quebec. Even shooters from Western Canada and the United States came to see what it was all about.

The committee's mandate for each GWNW is to present workshops and seminars that appeal to photojournalists from the from any size and type of publication so that when they return to work they feel enthused and renewed about their trade.

An equally important part of the the GWNW mandate is to take photojournalism students out of the classroom and offer them an opportunity to network with some of the leading shooters in the industry. Portfolio reviews and social events allow the working photographer to interact and encourage up and coming shooters. We encourage students to take advantage of setting up opportunities to shadow photojournalists and work on getting internships.

In the future the GWNW hopes to offer three types of support to photojournalists in the form of a student bursary and both a student and professional tuition break for the GWNW on a yearly basis.

The GWNW is organized and presented by volunteers. All workshop, seminar and portfolio leaders volunteer their time and expertise to give back to the photojournalism community.

Late Registration:
Those registrations postmarked after October 14, 2005 are subject to a late registration fee of $25.00 for a 2-day pass and $15.00 for a 1-day pass.
