Hey team -- I finally found a few hours to put together a preliminary Galleries feature. Check it out: http://lightstalkers.org/ls/editgallery.cfm Eugene, I had to reduce the maximum height of the full-size photo to 430px, so that it would fit inside an 800x600 window, minus toolbars and site navigation. What do you think? I'm wondering if we could trim down the site nav in the gallery window, so that it's really JUST the photo, and then a modicum of LS branding...

First off let me say it has all the makings of a fantastic community to rival Sports Shooter. You guys are doing a great job. Regarding the galleries is it possible at some point to add the ability to add captions to the images or if they could be grabbed directly from the IPTC from the jpeg. Also would it be possible to have the images not easily downloadable in the gallery. Cheers

Gawly....this is really a fab community....I really like the gallery feature....I guess I would request in the future a feature that allows either a comment or a preformatted toggle that tells a photog you like their image. I have visited several galleries.....seen a very striking photo....would like to send a complimentry message...but, feel direct email is too intrusive. So, not so much the gallery, but a particular image. :) BTW.....I finally got on the Firefox train via this website...diggin' it.

hm. captions are an interesting thought now that you mention it. i wonder how hard that would be to implement. . . as far as commenting on photos, there was a discussion of that i think a little while ago. the thing is that the idea for this site is not to be like friendster (or some other site that becomes a popularity contest) and so public commenting is probably something that won't be implemented. however, i know that private messaging is in the works. so once that's implemented you can send a little private message to someone to tell them you like their work or want to learn more, etc. (and this would work for people who's email addresses are hidden. so you could send them an email and that person wouldn't have to show his or her email. then that person could email you back and then you'd both be in the know and maybe, in the future, in each other's inner circles).

Yep...you got the gist of my intent....I run away from hit counters or public comments on work....but, I have seen some great stuff around here already and feel compelled to send a private note saying "thanks for sharing". But, I also think a preformated comment would protect the artists subjective expression and not promote pontificators wannabe's. So, if I could just hit a preformatted button that said "Thanks for sharing this great image" and it would be automatically sent to the gallery owner with a message included the image commented on, and who sent it. But, not sure if the PHP script or the Perl would get overloaded?

Hi Robert! I see what you're saying; I think the Private Message system we're developing is definitely going to serve this need. Again, this is on our list of things to do!

Nayan -- captions sounds pretty good to me, although I doubt we'd go the IPTC route. I'm going to run this past Teru and Eugene and see what we can come up with!

I am working on something slightly similar for my website. I found http://us2.php.net/iptcparse to be a helpfull starting place for pulling the captions from the IPTC (though I just started). This is an awsome site, thanks for puting all the work into it. David

One more suggestion - and this is related to the IM or e-mail contact. Put a link on the gallery page to the member's page. It's easy to open the gallery, and then I want to see more about the shooter, but frequently I've browsed beyond the original spot where I opened the gallery.

It seems that the captions field of the gallery section cut off the end of the captions, make the first letter of every word caps. A lot of my captions wouldn't fit. Thought I would let you know. Matthew

Hmm. Can you try it again? The titlecasing is fixed, and it should let you put in captions as long as 255 characters. If not, let me know.

The words are still in caps. at the beginning. A lot of my captions are over 255 words, so that was my only other problem. Thanks, Matt

Ah, ok. If you update the captions going forward, they'll retain your own capitalization. As for the limit, we do have to have a limit, and 255 is it for now. If it turns out to be a popular problem, we can look into it further. Thanks again!
