BGAN for dummies...

Hello all... I'll be working in Liberia next month, and planning to transmit by satellite for the first time. I'm Mac, and it looks like the BGAN is the way to go. Anybody have good advice for a first-timer? No tip too big, no tip too small. Thanks!

If you are in Monrovia don't use the Bgan unless you have to. Its much cheaper to go to the Royal Hotel and do a deal for access to the internet. As for the Bgan and Mac it's simple as long as you use a network cable, bluetooth can be a pain. If your Mac is running OSX Tiger, make sure you have all the updates from Apple before you go. Also download Skype if you don't have (www.skype.com) and but some credit to make international calls... much cheaper than the local cell phones.

Richard... thanks for all the good info. A clarification... I may be working some outside of Monrovia. Will I get a strong Bgan signal? I guess one of my orginal questions should have been whether it works in Liberia at all. It looks to be on the outer reaches of the satellite coverage.

Thanks again, Richard. [A note on cell phones in Liberia -- when I was there last year the price for calls (both domestic and international) was really reasonable, and the phones were much, much more convenient than any other option I'd had when I was there in 2000. (But didn't work much outside of Monrovia.) Since Taylor left, there are several companies and the competition has brought the price down and the service up. I bought an inexpensive phone last year and donated to an NGO when I left. Think I might do the same this time around.]
