If you knew that there was going to be no money (I'm assuming that you did), and that you were not going to get a photo credit, and that your image would be hidden behind text, would you have given them the image to use? I'm guessing not. Bad enough they couldn't (wouldn't) pay you, but to not give you credit is unacceptable, and to let their actions slide is to condone it, leaving the next photographer to face the same delima. If editors get away with it unchallenged on a regular basis (whether it matters to you or not), it will become their MO to the detriment of all.
