      <description>In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development developed a definition of sustainability that was included in its findings, which became known as the Brundtland Report.

It stated: 

Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

This is the most widely quoted definition but there are others. </description>
