He is best known for his actions as Chairman of Russia's Supreme Soviet, when he led the resistance against President Boris Yeltsin's unconstitutional dissolution of the parliament in 1993. In the mid-1990s he fought against the separatist Dudaev regime in Chechnya, and has since led a number of peace initiatives, including the proposal of a peace plan that he co-authored (the so-called Liechtenstein Plan).
