flight to Afghanistan

I am flying to Kabul around Nov 10 from the U.S. What's the choice of airlines flying in Kabul now? I flew there from Dubai 3 years ago but forgot what the airline name. I am wondering there are more choices now....Can I make flight reservation from the U.S? Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Re: flight to Afghanistan

hi Kuni - there's a lot of options now - from Dubai: Ariana, Kam, Pamir, and Safi - Kabul international has been growing rapidly in the past years, so might be more coming.

this is the contact info listed for Kam Air's North America office, but it seems to be a travel agent who also handles Ariana, and probably the others as well. I've done tickets from them a few times with no problem.

NORTH AMERICA/U.S.A
801 Mohawk Road West
Suite 203
Hamilton, Ontario
L9C 6C2 Canada
Tel: +1-905-389-0999
Fax: +1-905-389-1473
Toll Free: 1-888-952-6247
Email: info@flykamair.ca

Another option is to go via Delhi - Kam Air, Indian Air, and Ariana have routes to Kabul - I've been going this route, but its a bit complicated to buy tickets out of India with a US credit card -

there's also a PMC that flies charter directly into the military side of KAF from Dubai - useful if you're embedding in RC south and don't have an Afghan visa.

On the same note Teru was mentioning if your embedding, there's a direct flight from Dubai to Bagram Air Field once a week with DFS Middle East. They were just a cargo flight but have expanded to passengers. Of course your embed would have to be approved before you could fly into BAF. They stop in Kandahar also. http://www.dfsmiddleeast.com/media_news_detail.asp?newsID=20
There flight is on Wednesday's now and if you email them they'll send you all the info. I believe it's $600 one way but allows you to skip the Kabul anarchy.

My experience with Kam Air was a nightmare, had a paper ticket issued from a official NY travel agent of theirs but if you dont call and reconfirm before your flight they cancel you. Most likely was my fault though.

Kuni

There are several options. Kam Air fly Dubai - Kabul as do Pamir Air and Arianna. You can also fly New Dehli - Kabul with Air India.

Be carful booking Kam Air online!!! I did it that way and got bumped onto Pamir Air which has a completely different schedule to Kam Air and consequently had to buy a new rtn to Dubai with Kam Air to make my connection to London.
The Kam Air website is just a front and the transactions are done by a agent based in Toronto!!

If you can get someone to purchase a Kam Air ticket directly from a Kam Air office either in Kabul or Dubai I would recommend it. I took the Pamir air flight and was shit scared.

I witnessed one of the funniest and scariest things ever before that Pamir Ar flight. As I was getting onboard I saw the pilot doing his pre-flight check which consisted of him kicking the tyres of the plane like someone would do with their car prior to a long distance drive.

Avoid Pamir Air if you can.

OK Teru has provided you with the contact of the agent I mentioned above. If you book Kam Air online this is the agent that does the booking, I got bumped onto Pamir thinking I was paying for Kam Air. Check it carefully before you purchase.,

Thank you everyone who has responded to my question. Your info was very helpful. I will be flying from Delhi since I am planning to spend sometime in India after Afghanistan. BTW anyone knows inexpensive hotel near Delhi airport? I have to spend a night there for the connection.

ISAF now requires a valid Afghan visa for the duration of your embed - even if you're never processed through Afghan immigrations.

Thank you Lightstalkers for the insight into traveling from the US to Bagram Air Base. May I have the site to PMC Charter plane or your best recommendation of a charter flight out of Dubai to Bagram. I am looking at traveling in early December.
