http://www.lightstalkers.org/posts/darkroom-residency An entire Lightstalkers thread via RSS/XML. en-us Darkroom Residency Program Camera Club of New York (New York NY) The Camera Club of New York invites emerging photographers, who are not enrolled in undergraduate, graduate or certificate photo programs, to apply for a three-month residency at its Manhattan facility at 336 W. 37th St. Suite 206. A jury will select four residents for 2009. Residents will receive film, paper, and $3,000 stipends, and will have access to CCNY's darkrooms (black and white and color) and shooting studio, up to three printing/shooting sessions per week during a three-month term. Living accommodations not provided. Please send a CD with 10 images, jpg files only at 72dpi, approx.1024 x 768 pixels (no more than 1 MB), with cv (hard copy) and separate image description list (title, date, medium, dimension--hard copy, please) and any support materials to Camera Club of New York, 336 W. 37th St, Suite 206, NY, NY 10018-4212 by Dec. 13th (postmark deadline.) Applications may also be dropped off (through a mail slot in the door.) Please be sure to label your CD and include SASE for return of materials. Decisions will be announced by Dec. 23. Mon, 08 Dec 2008 21:42:37 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/posts/darkroom-residency#136394 Not speaking for them, but I would think so.. the thing is (as far as I recall) 4 are given out and you can't specify which term you would like, so if you have to uproot your life to get to NYC and find a place to live, it could be challenging, as living accommodations aren't provided, and one starts Jan 1. Also, if you do send from abroad I would let them know you are submitting because even though the deadline is a postmark by date, yours could take longer and you wouldn't want it to arrive too late..they decide within 10 days from the deadline. By posting the question here—instead of sending them an email directly for a "yes" or "no" answer—I hoped for a couple of answers like yours. So, how much is the minimum I should expect to spend for a place to stay? I don't care for any comforts but it should be safe enough to leave my cameras there while being in the darkroom. Also, I'm a decent printer myself and the reason I'm looking into this is the possibility to meet others who are better than I and learn a couple things from them. Is that a reasonable expectation or do the people who receive the residencies only gain free access to the darkrooms? Tue, 09 Dec 2008 07:55:53 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/posts/darkroom-residency#136435 Thodoris..again, not speaking for them, just my impression..there are other photographers around who pay for membership who certainly are skilled who you would probably strike up friendships with and possibly learn from, but a lot of what goes on is in a private darkroom, so it would be hard to say what your interaction would be exactly, and of course people are often pressed for time here. But the environment is very supportive and community based, with lectures, exhibits, and classes going on, and I would bet you'd find some of what you refer to. You can stay at a hostel, safe enough (this one is close by http://www.chelseahostel.com/rates.html) but for the same $1100 or so a month you might be able to find a roommate/sublet situation.
