Since its creation in 1997, Paris Photo, the international fair for nineteenth-century, modern and contemporary photography, has won recognition as the world’s premiere event for photography in all its rich diversity, from rare early prints to avant-garde work from the 1920s and ’30s, and from documentary photography to the latest practices, including fashion, movie-still photography and photojournalism.

Each year during the month of November, Paris Photo hosts some hundred galleries and publishers from around the globe at the prestigious Carrousel du Louvre. The fair offers a clear perspective on trends and the market to art lovers and collectors.

In the Statement section, Paris Photo also pays tribute each year to the photography scene in a particular country other than France. A guest curator selects the Statement galleries to present solo exhibitions of photographers’ works.

well no, if I had one I wouldn't ask :) I knew I should have made one back in Bangkok, I knew it !

The women on the phone said they had security concerns with the Louvre and didn't even want to tell them the real number of invitations they sent.

If you have an idea, I'm up for it. I work just next by, it would be ashame to miss the free foods ;)

A Press card should get you in ...otherwise, you try to find someone with a badge that can take you in...someone you know, or someone you just met...haha...good luck!

Jenny, the fair is up for three days, 1100-2000 hrs... The opening night is usually a packed, sweaty affair that simply ain't that fun. God save us all if there's a minister of culture and security threats to top it off, although the vision of a flaming Safrane in the middle of the carrousel du louvre might be something the more conceptually-minded might appreciate... Could a good way to further the debate of photojournalism and the gallery ;)

If you have a press card, i'd assume you can easily get credentialled at the gate, which will avoid you having to pay the 15 Euros admittance.

While you're in town, i highly suggest the Jus de Pomme show down the street, Stanley Greene and Michal Rovner especially. There's also a Fontcuberta show in town (instituto cervantes i believe), and some Delahaye at the Maison Rouge.

My feeling is, from your description, that I'd like to experience the 'Vision of the Flaming Safrane'!!... please post a shot of it incase we don't get in!... thanks for the info. on the other events as well, and for the gatecrashing tips Bruno!

there is also a willy ronis exhibit at the Hotel de Ville...............and there is no entrance fee !! Yes I'm in Paris (until the 21st nov) but I don't know how to update my location ..........

Mike, if you want to see ronis' exhibition, you better go very early in the morning at opening time (9 I beleive), or else you'll wait 1h even during the week...

Tips on Paris Photo: Get a press badge from someone who is leaving, wait for someone else to chat up the security, chose your moment carefully and sneak quickly in behind (Stanley Greene makes a good screen), or sweet-talk the press officer and you might get given an invitation, or forget the manouvres and pay the 15 euros entry fee. If Bruno comes to stay, a bottle of Armagnac comes in quite handy, especially either side of software tutorials.

Nigel, the manoevres were to get into the opening night when the tickets were all sold out. I didn't make it to the show until Saturday anyway so there was no need for covert tactics. If I'm honest, I wish I'd left early to see the Salgado exhibition at the Biblioteque Nationale which is only open Tuesday to Saturday... but Paris was a dream and I'm considering relocating!!.... Bruno? Armagnac? Software tutorials? didn't get to see any of those....

I was talking about getting in on the opening night!! But if you went everyday then a pass or invitation is preferable. It was my bottle of Armagnac and the conversation took place in my loft, very enjoyable too. I will be stocking up with Armagnac for the future!

I know a place where that could be done, it's very nice and within the Montorgueil area. Everyone could bring some drink and food, we would put on some music. It's a private place but not a flat, may be easier (it's a sort of photo gallery).

I like the idea, but being on the move so much makes organizing such an event a little tricky... spontaneity becomes the order of the day, unless a little bit of synchronicity comes into play... the big organized events are the best as there's so much going on that it has to be in the calendar.... Perpignan is best for that... and so to work...

Yes, Nigel Armagnac was very nice (yes, was...oups) then again, I had a very strong reason for indulging myself...a terrible toothache...old Armagnac is good medecine! I felt it was quite a good edition this year, less ugly nudes, less bloody installation printed 5 meters wide and less pointless ugly german buildings (usually also printed 5 meters wide)...see you all next year...
