recommendations/referrals

Heya Shinji-
the printspace thread reminded me, we could use some kind of deck or a spot on the site for people to post recommendations/referrals, etc...darkrooms, printers,camera repair, assistants, health insurance, travel agents, etc.

Sure -- are you thinking a new topic, like "Gear" and "Tech Support"?

Re: recommendations/referrals

I'm not sure--it could be done as a topic section, with a list of posts for subjects: ie darkrooms,insurance, travel agents, etc. and then threads running off each subtopic. maybe that
s the simplest solution...but I think it could also be done as a separate section, like the calender feature...maybe call it "resources"? it would be best though, if resources can be nominated, and then LS members can add their testimonials or critiques, and also offer alternate resources.

Re: recommendations/referrals

Hey, Gents (happy thanksgiving weekend):
I think it would be useful for it to be its own topic. But unlike other topics where we scroll through a chronological history of postings, it seems like it would be useful for the sub topics (ie, dermatologist, computer repair store, cheap dinner) to be easily locatable. So, as an example, if I need a dentist quickly, I don't have to wade through postings for good sweet shops, excellent yoga studios, etc. In short, it could be a place to share about "folks who treat us right."

Conversely, I can see the anti-recommendations being posted too; "people/businesses which are not great."

Tricky how information would be identified vis a vis subject field: "good doctor" doesn't begin to address information about the area of expertise and location of office (two factors which would immediately influence whether I even want to look at that posting). I like the idea of nominated resources getting user-rated with some room for comments from the rater.

Hey guys -- thanks for the ideas. Interesting stuff; sounds kind of like reverse classifieds, or an epinions.com type of things.

Let's look at it on a practical level -- what types of things are Lightstalkers going to be particularly interested in? So far we've got:

* darkrooms
* printers
* camera repair
* assistants
* health insurance
* travel agents

I'm visualizing something where, let's say, Printspace has a listing under darkrooms. Then people could submit star ratings along with their comments, and we'll do an average star rating?

Maybe Eugene can draw a mock-up?

Re: recommendations/referrals

Ah, I get it: narowing down the scope to be "LS-specific." That makes sense - so it's info that's specific for the community, and unavailable elsewhere. Thanks for clarifying, Shinji.

Re: recommendations/referrals

ideally, as the list gets longer, a search feature would be good too. I don't know how important a star rating system is, but it would be good if there's a place on each subject for feedback, alternatives, etc.

ie. retsu starts a subject/topic recommending his proctologist. then jon anderson adds the contact info for his proctologist in the Dominincan Republic. Adam Cohen weighs in with a cautionary tale about a quack proctologist he once visited in Cuba. Perhaps at that point, we will have a proctologist in the member directory who will post on the subject, offering a Lightstalkers bulk rate for proctology.

Re: recommendations/referrals

Yeah, and just to further clarify -- by LS-specific, I just mean focused on stuff that's truly useful to everyone here. People can post whatever they want, of course, but we shouldn't be in a hurry to try to serve the whole world...

Teru, I'll get right on setting up *proctologiststalkers.org*.
