Do 1 Thing

Just wanted to let everyone know about Do 1 Thing, a project that is using photojouralism to inspire people to reach out to homeless youth on Valentines Day.

The project was started by Najla Feanny, who has an amazing track record of leveraging her skills and contacts as a professional photojournalist to benefit the homeless and orphaned youth of her home state of New Jersey. As president of the Heart Gallery of New Jersey, she organizes photographers to make portraits of youth in foster care to help them get adopted. The photographs travel the state in exhibition and have resulted in dozens of youth finding permanent homes. Without the benefit of stable homes lives and consistent schooling, many youth who are not adopted end up homeless once they age out of the system. Do 1 Thing will highlight the impact small acts of generosity have on the lives of homeless youth in America by encouraging people to do something on Valentines Day 2009 and publish photos and video of those acts throughout the day on the website.

In preparation, many talented and award winning photographers are documenting the lives of these youth. Join the Facebook Causes group (www.Causes.com/do1thing) and check out the project website (http://www.do1thing.org/) to follow the project and find out how to pitch in.

Thanks for posting this,Ida...

While looking out for one's own material & spiritual needs in these crazy times, the thought of doing a small and/or random act of kindness to some young person in need can be a wonderful thing for our own hearts & souls and can signal the advent of brighter and happier days.

Spread the news, fellow LS'ers & a Happy & Bright New Year to all.

I think it's a phenomenal project both in the message and the way photography and viral media are being used to increase scope and involvement. The team that has assembled around the project will do the cause justice. Do 1 Thing will be publishing a dramatically overhauled website soon which will show the depth and breadth of what they are doing. I'll let people know when that's up.
