Re: FOUNDRY WORKSHOP 2010 ANNOUNCED

I'd like to see a workshop in Eastern Europe somewhere - Kiev, Belgrade, Bucharest, Tirana, Nizhni Novgorod or something where there's a huge stable of talented photographers who have no means to connect to the larger world of photography. Sort of in photographic exile! A workshop subsidized for the local photographers (which I believe Foundry is) who get the chance to mix with their Western (or wherever they're from) colleagues and Instructors. Okay, that's all I have to say and I'd even volunteer my services...

Re: FOUNDRY WORKSHOP 2010 ANNOUNCED

Donald, thanks for the comments. We only do one workshop a year, and we rotate continents so as to affect as many locals as possible, so we are getting to your neck of the woods! - this year was a toss up between Sarajevo and Istanbul, and the latter edged out the former, just barely, for logistical and financial reasons. That being said, come on down to Old Stamboul- we'd love to have ya. Add you are correct, local/regional photographers are subsidized, and we offer a host of scholarships as well. For this year, regional means Turkey/Caucasus/MidEast/Balkans.

Good luck Eric... it's during the World Cup, for which Turkey did not qualify, and Bosnia might (after they will kick out Portugal)... that must have been a reason for Stamboul to edge Sarajevo, for everyone in Sarajevo (just like in all of the Balkans, and Eastern Europe in general) will be watching soccer only...

Re: FOUNDRY WORKSHOP 2010 ANNOUNCED

As the guy who photographed and blogged last years Foundry and who has seen a sneak preview of the instructor lineup, I can only say...wow! If all the instructors who indicated willingness to come follow through, it will be one of the best workshops ever.
But remember, Foundry is principally for the benefit of photographers in the regions in which they are held. So we will be especially eager to get applications from photographers in the Middle East and North Africa, and other tributary areas where structured photojournalism education may be hard to come by (including the Balkans, among others). Please encourage such people to come to Istanbul. Of course others are welcome too.

so Istanbul is it!!!??? great! i look forward to it...and to another successful workshop. As Neal writes, we all hope to have a record number of photographers from the Middle East, Africa and Central Europe/Balkans...and indeed from everywhere else. what makes the workshop are not only the instructors but the participants.

Fantastic news! Istanbul is an amazing city and will offer the students an incredible collection of moments and images. And we must get the word out to photogs in the region to attend: Middle East, Caucasus, Turkey, etc.

If anyone has any ideas in how to establish a network to these photographers please let Eric know. Looking forward to teaching another great group of photographers!

Eric does a great job with Foundry, and its a great venue. I was tied to certain dates for my project in Coney Island, and the overlap with Foundry is unfortunate, but hopefully there are enough folks out there to fill both events.

They are completely different types of projects, and there are varied needs out there right now.....

I am putting this thought in both posts on Foundry, because nobody should miss it.
All this is a tribute to two things:
- the vision, persuasive powers and generosity of one Eric Beecroft in establishing and running this project as a part of his already busy life, and
- the unselfishness of the instructors, who are giving their time to the objectives of Foundry; teaching photojournalism to emerging photographers from areas of the world where formal instruction may not exist.
We in this profession/craft should be proud of these among us who are so giving of themselves and their talents....

FWIW, Istanbul has been named the 2010 European Capital of Culture (a designation it shares with Essen, Germany, and Pecs, Hungary).

Here are two new links to Istanbul from the NY Times. Not sure if you have to be a subscriber to view both. The second is from yesterday's travel section.

Thodoris-
Good question. Its all really up to your standards; on average, I think you can do Istanbul on $50 (low end) to $75 a day, using youth hostels and eating cheap and using public transport. Up it to $100 a day US and you get a bit more luxury. Turkey is still much cheaper than most of (western) Europe, though nothing like South Asia or Latin America of course. Prices have been creeping upwards in Istanbul over the past five to ten years; its getting more expensive each year it seems, (compared with the rest of Turkey, esp the east, which can be dirt cheap). The drive by some to have Turkey join the EU, and the fact that Istanbul is a capital of culture this year, doesnt help matters. The forum will be up on the website soon, and you can find folks to split rooms with- a sure way to save costs.
