Willing to travel for Camera Repair: Canon in Africa

Getting the dreaded Error 70 on my Canon 5DII, and I am in Sudan ...

Thinking it may not be possible to get the camera fixed in Nairobi.. Anyone have advice - maybe Cape Town, Joburg, Dubai or Cairo are a better bet?

Cairo has nothing. Dubai has CPS but they are slow.
Not sure about Nairobi (doubt it) or Joburg, but in the Middle East the only place able to do pro-level repairs is CPS in Beirut.

I would suggest Johannesburg, but don't expect miricals, the official guys here are not fantastic. I have a "back street" guy I use who is brilliant.

Official Canon guys: CameraTek - http://www.cameratek.co.za/
Sunray photographic: sunrayphoto@mweb.co.za

Shayne.

I would just send it to Canon US for repairs making sure that you know well the customs regulations once the camera ships back. I wouldn't risk it much with anywhere else.

Re: Willing to travel for Camera Repair: Canon in Africa

Hi Jenn,

I agree with Guy on this. I think its worth it to send camera out to a certified service center in Europe or US. I once tried to repair a film camera body in Nairobi several years back with Elite cameras but after 3 months of not fixing it, they ended up damaging it more. So for a high priced DSLR, take your time and spend the extra cash for sending it out or even with someone who is going to Europe or US. Its worth it at the end of the day. I could refer you to some manafacturer service centers in Switzerland or Germany.

If you go with sending the camera to a repair center, why not sending it to an official Canon repair center that is cheap? I remember having lenses and flash repaired in the Bangkok service center for a bargain. If you send them an email with a question they do reply you rather fast, and with an answer.

Thanks all, going with Guy's advice and sending the body back to NY with a friend. Will be without the MkII for a few months but better to stay under warranty in case the camera can be replaced.. Cheers

Re: Willing to travel for Camera Repair: Canon in Africa

Just to say for future reference Steven at Sunray Photographic in Johannesburg is a genius repairman. I've been using him for 12 years and he gets repairs done quickly, efficiently and reasonably - better than any official Canon centre here. He also works on other brands, he used to be with Nikon SA. Unless it was an under-guarantee repair I wouldn't trust anyone else with my equipment.
