I have been getting errors for the last 2 days and unable to login to finalize my submission.

Thanks

Yeah I am having problems as well. I managed to upload 1 story but after selecting the category got an error message. That was 2 days ago. I can access my personal data but cannot upload or retrieve what I already uploaded.

I get this error

An error occurred
An error occured while retrieving your story entries.

Please try again. If the error keeps occurring, contact help@worldpressphoto.org. In your e-mail, please provide the following event key and the event details.

Event key:
Event details: Failed to lazily initialize a collection

I did get a reply from WPP but it was generic and I still cannot upload.

From WPP

Dear Mark,

As many photographers are uploading there work at the moment, there is a lot of traffic on the web entry site. Please try it again tomorrow, we are doing our utmost best to make the website work as efficient as possible. Please don’t be worried about the deadline, we will of course make sure that you can submit your entry fine.

Best regards,

Cheers Mark, I'm getting that error too. Images I thought I'd succesfully uploaded have disappeared and now I can't select any page within the site without getting many other errors.

This seems more of a buggy thing as opposed to a traffic issue?

I also dont get the 'my stories/upload' option that were there previously, just the error. 'Event id: 725576747'.
The singles options remain ok, as well as the 'my data' tab.

The personal/professional data has never been an issue. 2 Days ago I uploaded 11 images from 1 of the stories I was submitting.
It took a while but it finally went then I selected the category and title and after a long attempt it timed out.

Now I am unable to see those images or upload further images either singles or stories. Just the error code.

The extended deadline is not much use if you cannot upload.

It's quite shoddy to be honest.

Re: World Press Photo login errors

Federico there is no need to send 300 dpi as the images are projected.

I imagine if this continues WPP should allow entries to be send via an alternative means. If 1 photographer is unable to upload because of technical problems that orginate at WPP then the contest is null and void.

I am going to call them and find out what is going on. I will let you know what they say!

thanks...this is the email I received when I asked about dpi...I imagined some of the jury need "working prints":

Dear Federico,

The images should be at least 72 dpi, 300 is better. The longest side of the image is most important, this should be at least 3000 pixels long.

Best regards,

Anna

I'll resize my photos but with this kind of dimensions they suggested I think their server is just full!

I have to go away for the weekend tomorrow, and I'm afraid that at this rate I just won't get everything uploaded by tomorrow morning... another deadline extension perhaps? I hope...

Everything seemed to be working fine. I deleted the files that were already on the server and uploaded it again....to 66% It has crashed on me twice there.

Hold on, make that 3 times.

I suspect there is now a backlog and everyone is trying to upload.

I am writing this via my blackberry so it does not intervere with the upstream.

Well, I tried it and answered my own question. Yes, you can upload just a couple of images for a story and then add more... so I'm doing it in batches in two at the moment...

Everything's really slow though... but I'm watching Entourage Season 5 on DVD and sipping Talisker 57º sigle malt scotch in the downtime... :-)

hey everyone-

oooooh single malt. that sounds good.

yep. i have been trying for 2 days to no avail- the only advice they gave me was you can downsize to 2000 PX on the max. dimension instead of 3000 but that is not helping.

i cannot get a story to upload at all. i will try in the US wee hours and see if that works. but seems to be a mess.

Re: World Press Photo login errors

I have managed to upload one story. The trick is to upload in batches of 3 save them in the category and then add the extra images.

Also the metadata is not in the uploaded files, I had to add that once the image has uploaded.

It's a pain in the arse but appears to be the only way to do it.

I received an email from WPP asking photographers to downsize to 2000 pix but that (in my opinion) gives the photographers who have already successfully submitted their images @ 3000 pix an unfair advantage as they will obviously look bigger when projected. Having said that a good picture will look good at most any decent viewing size.

I have uploaded 3000 pix images ok.

It has been a real mind fxxk, single malt sounds like a very good idea.

Best of luck

It's impossible to upload anything bigger than a single photo. Uploading a story in batches doesn't work (at least not here), because even if I upload only two photos, I can't get past saving the story.
I wonder how will they ensure all of us will be able to upload on time, considering we have work to do by 17th, and will not be spending our time uploading for hours.

Yeah true but i don't like going to Scotland.

Have you seen Braveheart? Edward Longshanks sums it up "The problem with Scotland is it's full of Scots"

This is what could happen while I park up and buy some single Malt! Just kidding I have a few scottish friends!

I'm done. What a fantastic waste of precious time.
And I'm sitting comfortably at my desk with a super fast internet connection and electricity 24 hours a day. I can't imagine how this must have been for a freelancer operating out of a dingy internet cafe with a slow and shaky connection in say, Zimbabwe, Mali or Pakistan. Pretty much impossible to take part in this year's World Press Photo for these guys, I guess.

i finally was able to upload ONE story. good advice to upload just 2-3 images at a time and wait until the site finishes loading completely at each step before trying to move forward. rushing it will crash it.

i agree with christoph that i am here in a spot with hi-speed and all the amenities and i had all that trouble...many people will have a really hard time getting thru.

am sure they are working real hard to fix it up- seems to be working much better than it was...good luck

If this can be of any help I finally filed 2 stories and the job was really easier after compressing the pictures a little bit (I didn't downsize them), instead of using level 12 on photoshop I used 9 and uploaded 3 at a time. A bit slow but it worked.
Cheers

An incredible pain in the ass. I found you have to upload about 3 at a time and add more after for a story. I kept the pixel dimensions at 3000 px, but changed my resolution 1o 150 dpi and saved at 9 compression, only then could I upload and it still takes a while. I gave up and only entered one project, not worth the hassle for bragging rights (but enough for a free book!)

Re: World Press Photo login errors

It has been hard but finally I was able to submit 3 stories (total 30 photos). The problem for me is that bottlenecks were due the high resolution required and the amount of submissions during the last days. If you see Oskar Barnack rules you'll see that they only accept really small files...this can be a possible solution for the next wpp. I totally disagree with Luca who wrote: " 5 days to upload 4 stories – to be honest i prefer to pay for it and get it done in 15 mins"... wpp is the most important contest in our business and it's also one of the most important cultural event during the year. I don't think it's right or fair to wish a fee to be in wpp. I'd rather suggest wpp to reconsider their criteria of admission and to accept smaller files...then everything should work well like in the past. Good luck to everybody and try to email them (from a spam safe address, like @gmail.com..)if you still have problems. They'll help you.

Re: World Press Photo login errors

Yesterday Sunday 17 january, i was trying to upload my images.
I sent them couple of messages telling that there was a problem with the server (i knew it would be oversaturated).
As i had spent 8 hours trying to upload just 12 pictures, and i could just see 6 of them, i just uploaded the story like that, with just 6 pics.
But then they sent me two messages:
-One of them telling me about the difficulties they were having with the server, and then, the best, that tells me that i can upload later the pictures, because they dont want to leave none out of the contest.
So, thats it, people having problems should contact them and tell them what troubles had this last week, before the deadline.
I trust them, just waiting the message to finish my 6 pictures left to end the story. And thats it.
Hope u get the chance to.
Good luck to all.

I had the same problems too - had uploaded half a dozen singles no problem. It then kept crashing while uploading a story of 12 pics. I gave up and when I could log in and get my singles visible cut my lossses and submitted. If I'd known of the deadline extensions I may have continued trying. Poor effort from the organisers considering the prestige of the event and the time they have to get it together. Good luck to you all.

I think the best way to skip this problems is to avoid to do it at the last minute. I did it one week before the dead line and took 10 minutes...and If everyone do it as soon as they can also who has to it last minute will have less traffic, I guess...
