in Thomassin, up the mountain from Petionville.. there is a medical clinic we built called the House of David Community Health Center in Thomassin, Haiti.. it was built by people in Charlottesville, to Virginia Building codes. .. It withstood the quake while all the building surrounding it were flattened.. 2 of our people got there today to assess what we do next.

BGF on the ground in Haiti today

Jack Stoner and Mike Stoneking are in Haiti today. They left yesterday, traveling through the Dominican Republic to Jacmel. With John Winings of Haiti Fund, they will visit the CODEP compound and, hopefully, hike into the mountains to check on the families who are participating in the reforestation program. They will assess damages and continue to form the plan for how BGF will be part of the recovery effort in Haiti.

BGF team leaves February 10 for Thomassin
The next BGF team will arrive in Port-au-Prince on February 10th to visit the House of David Community Health Center in Thomassin. At this time, Kelly Eplee, Jack Horn, Jr., Lewis Joachim, Brian Koerner, Antonio Martinez (team leader) and Howard Pape along with Sue Robinson and Dr. Leon Pamphile of the Functional Literacy Ministry will deliver medicine, assess the clinic, and repair equipment.

Andy if this is of interest, email me direct if you want me to see if I can get a working phone number/contact for you

Andy, where are you staying in Petionville? Looking for options w/internet access. I have already done the tents and a pricey hotel with no running water. I will be there in a few weeks again.
THANKS.

Ramin, there isn't much.....Villa Creole is closing on the 21st for repairs. Plaza is like a jail, and the Park is half destroyed but there are OK rooms in the back for $50. Its not a fancy place.....Ollafsen is $100, kind of precious and a lot of folks with 'tude. Good for star gazing. I am at Ibo Le Le with noisy New Yorkers in the next room, what is it about my people? Ibo Le Le is way up the hill and in the 40's used to get movie stars....it was what the Montana became before it collapsed. Unforunately, $100.....per night. So, its catch as catch can as far as hotels.

Anyway, cleaning up is actually moving fast downtown.....there was a big move by police yesterday that Ilaria and I documented, an actual riot with rocks flying as hundreds of "looters" poured into a electronics warehouse, carrying off hundreds of large boxes, and brawling in the street below. Incredibly the cops actually caught 40 in the building, beat a few, and marched the others through the rubble, carrying boom boxes, and "open box" items....some were sadly kids of maybe 12. There was a pregnant woman. Most were part of little "gangs" that operate around ground zero, stealing what they can.

The cops were actually laughing as they looked down an alley, and people were lowering themselves out of a window, clinging to each other like in a jail break, holding the boxes. It was a human chain of fools.....Ilaria and I photographed the frenzy with no problems except the flying rocks, and she had a battery and card stolen from her bag. Amazing, someone had seen the thief in action and returned with her stuff-- the benefits of being a woman I suppose.

Thanks Andy and sad about the looters. At least the cops did not shoot the looters in the head, or I hope they didn't. How long are you staying? I will be there Early March.

Ramin, the great thing is that the looters were not shot because the pictures were all over the press a few weeks and it made Preval look bad....so he ordered them to stop shooting. Thanks Garup, Damon Winter and those who were there to record this, and of course credit also to the editors in this case.....never too many photographers, especially in a story as broad as this was. Haitians cell phones for the most part are not camera ready for the most part, so citizen journalism is not possible as in Iran, etc.

Good luck in March, I need a few more to come with me and I can do another trip.....

Andy please can you help me, could you get someone local there to translate this for me. “Wayomdi Aristide We Pa Weâ€*
It was sprayed on the side of a destroyed building I photographed, would like to know what it says for the caption.

Stay safe, I am hoping to be back in PAP and Leogang in about 3 months.

Not sure Shayne....I have seen some signs of Aristide support, his supporters made a point of asking me to photograph a sign of him today. Three months, wow! Wondering where this will be in three months....hard to imagine ten days. Hope I can be here too.....

Re: In Petionville this AM

Hey Andy the story of the woman getting herstuff back is due to the culture here. there was a guy here who dropped his wallet with hundreds of dollars and had a guy run down the street to give it back to him. There is a cultural taboo against theft in Haiti. In villages they have literally killed people for stealing from others in the village.

Logistics.
The international guest house is $30 a night I believe and they may have internet. http://www.fida-pch.org/index.php?p=20 There is also internat cafes around for $1/hr highspeed.

I've been staying at Mathew 25 off of Delma 33. Not sure if they have a website Though this location is really only letting doctors and aid workers stay here. I'm working with a team here which is my ticket. Though if they have room they'll probably take you. They have internet and 3 meals a day. Right now it's mobbed but it changes everyweek.

There's a few drivers I can reccommend as well if anyone needs em.
