I have been shooting a project for the past 6 months and would really like to create an inexpensive, portfolio-type book for my subjects to have. Basically, I will need to order by volume (probably about 50-80 books to hand out) and it needs to be done cheaply. I'm thinking about 30 images max, black and white, nicely printed with a soft back... something you could give someone as a gift so they can see all of the images you've taken of them. Unfortunately, I might have to sell them to my subjects, which I hate to do, but I can't really afford to get 80 books made out of pocket. I would only charge them production costs (something like $10 a piece would be ideal), and that way everyone could afford to buy one. Any suggestions on what company to go to for this? Perhaps there is a way to do it online? Thanks!!

www.blurb.com Their print quality is lower than offset but their books are cheap. Cheers, m

Hello Erin, I really like the small format (A5), softcover books you can generate out of Aperture. They are quite inexpensive and the quality is good, at least here in Europe. Kind regards, frank

Surprizingly good quality can be found on the Adorama books (w 17th st., ny).. they really do a very good job

I 2nd David on Adorama, had some small books of specific projects made, and a large portfolio and the results were great as long as you are calibrated. Well worth the price

Have a look at Magcloud - they print on an 11x17 sheet folded in half to make an 8.5x11 magazine. It's quite cheap - .20/page. Not sure if there's a bulk discount. The quality is pretty good though.

I used MyPublisher for my photobook "American Tour" (www.mvlimbert.com/AmTourCover.html). Like all print-on-demand books, the quality is OK, not super stunning. Price (with discount codes) came out to around $20 per 58-page 5 x 6.25" book. (Made it to the final nomination stage of 2009 New York Photo Festival Awards...)

Do not use SP Gallery Books – http://spgallerybooks.com/ They took over from Fast Back Books- I have just canceled by order after a month shenanigans – and no book – remarkably bad and un-professional behavior.

I agree mypublisher.com is very reliable and good quality work I had a few book made up with them and was very happy with the results
