Project Space Moises Saman Moises Saman is a news photographer for New York Newsday whose images of Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and other countries transcend reportage by inflicting uncanny sensations on the viewer. Looking at Saman*s photographs often feels like being there. Seemingly not content with shots from a safe physical and moral distance, Saman*s photos reveal an exceptional engagement with the environment he documents. The following is a series of unpublished photos from two of Saman*s trips to Palestine this year, most recently to cover Yasser Arafat*s death. Footage of young boys in the West Bank throwing rocks amid clouds of tear gas has become an iconic image of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, and while Saman captures this repeated scene with grim intensity, arguably the most arresting images here are simply of daily life. Although violence isn*t a constant in Palestine, its ghost haunts many of these photos, perhaps most dramatically in the image of three silhouettes in front of a bullet-riddled building, the image taken from ground level, as if Saman was hiding quietly. The latest news out of Palestine is that Marwan Barghouti will not run against Mahmoud Abbas in the Palestinian presidential race, clearing the way for Abbas, who was fired upon on November 15 at a public mourning for Arafat. While Abbas escaped unharmed, his bodyguard was killed, and one of Saman*s photos shows the grieving mourners. The new icon in the struggle between Palestine and Israel has become the concrete separation wall Israel has constructed near East Jerusalem to divide the territories. Saman*s photo of the wall shows a lone figure strolling its dusty perimeter, a no man*s land if there ever was one. Moises Saman is a staff photographer for New York Newsday and has recently shown his photographs at the Fotografie Museum in Amsterdam; Satellite Gallery, New York; and in BlackBook magazine.
