Pakistan - Refugee Camps

I`m making a research about the refugees camps in the North of Pakistan, close to Afghanistan.
If anyone knows which the most important camps in this area are, or any other details related to this subject please let me know. It will be very helpful.
Thank you very much!

Re: Pakistan - Refugee Camps

Most of the refugee camps were in NWFP - near peshawar - although status is unclear as the Pakistani state finally succeeded in clearing/razing many of them. Worth checking out is Kachagari - was one of the oldest camps for Afghan refugees, completely demolished and cleared in 2008, then re-occupied by IDPs from Bajaur and Swat in 2009. Jalozai and Shamshatsu were the other major population centers. I haven't been there recently, so can't speak to current conditions.

Re: Pakistan - Refugee Camps

I've worked around Peshawar on this issue in January and February 2009. 450,000 IDPs who turned into 2 millions during the following summer with the Swat problem. The former afghan refugees camp is called Kacha Ghari - the Afghan people were forced to leave. But, at that time, 70% of the IDPs were OUTSIDE the official camps : lack of informations, various problems due to the extreme life in camps, settled in relatives places,...
That story is very important to report about. And the political side is relevant, too. I've learned so much on site...
I plan to go back there on the next winter.
I could send you some infos and contacts directly on your email.
The Pashtu population is so great and worth your visit !

Re: Pakistan - Refugee Camps

FYI - the reports of 2 million IDPs from Swat are extremely questionable. As noted, only a small fraction (actually far less than 30%) of that number was visible or verifiable in IDP camps - As always, the numbers are extrapolated, and probably inflated by agencies with a vested interest in "massive" numbers.

Not to say that there wasn't or isn't a refugee crisis, but don't go to NWFP with the expection of seeing millions of people in tents.

In theory, Pakistan has a refugee/IDP population of well over 10 million from conflict and natural disaster in Afghanistan, Kashmir, FATA and Swat - the reality is anyone's guess.
