Festival Opening: March 24^th Fremantle Arts Centre 6:30pm

Fremantle, Western Australia: The historic port town of Fremantle becomes centre stage for some of the most significant names in contemporary photography for FotoFreo 2006: The City of Fremantle Festival of Photography.

Running from March 25^th to April 25^th 2006, this unique event has caught the attention of photographers, curators, writers and critics from all over the world. Featuring a programme of exhibitions, audiovisual projections, workshops, forums, seminars, films and a conference, the festival takes place in over forty venues throughout Fremantle and Perth.

The 3^rd biennial festival in 2006 has grown into an event which displays the work of more than two hundred national and international photographers; including legendary Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland (USA) whose fifty year career includes iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman; Antoine d’Agata (France) and Trent Parke (Australia) from the famous photographic co-operative, Magnum Photos; legendary war photographer Tim Page; National Geographic Photographer David Doubilet regarded as the best underwater photographer in the world; as well as key exhibitions of celebrated contemporary photo-artists from China, Britain, and the Netherlands such as Machiel Botman, Shaoyinong and Muchen, Bai Yiluo, Anna Fox, and Melanie Manchot amongst others. Representatives from include Patrick Brown, Anne Zahalka, Anthony Luvera, Michael Coyne, Matthew Sleeth and Montalbetti + Campbell.

Speaking at the festival are leading cultural and photographic commentators including Susan Bright (curator and author of the recently released Art Photography Now, UK), François Hébel (Director of Rencontres d'Arles de la Photographie, FRANCE), Mark Haworth-Booth (former Senior Curator of Photography, V&A Museum, UK), Alasdair Foster (Director Australian Centre for Photography), Shahidul Alam (Online publisher, photojournalist and media activist, BANGLADESH), Gael Newton (Curator of Photography, National Gallery of Australia) plus many others.
