Videographer rates

A friend of mine just got a job with a fairly major online news network. She's in need of freelance videographers and asked me if I'd be interested, since I am a photojournalist but with some video experience. I've never done spot news video before and have no idea what a good rate would be. I'm not clear yet on all the details but I'm pretty sure I would only be required to shoot video, maybe not even sound, and I doubt I'll be doing any editing. As a photographer for something like this I would ask $50 an hour, depending of course how long the day was likely to be. Does that sound reasonable for video too?

Re: Videographer rates

James,
In my experience it's usually a daily not hourly fee. Nothing takes just a hour that doesn't tie up a whole work day. All of the major online media outlets (who have a print version as well, not TV) that I've worked for, pay between 250-500 per day. Some want all rights to the footage, others one-time use. Just as in still photography, commercial or corporate video pays much more and is highly based on usage rights. As it's been thoroughly & heatedly discussed here, having the skill and or equipment to shoot stills and video doesn't mean it should be expected from you on a job. Unless the client is paying more and understands both formats will suffer trying to juggle both in a day, it's something I stay away from as a selling point.

Best of luck and if your friend needs additional cameramen, my door is always open. Lol.

In between 500$ - 1,000$ per day, and upwards for corporate. If you can keep the rights on your material and you are sure you can re-sell you could go down. However this can be tricky because a client can use that as an argument to ask for a lower rate.

Doing both stills and video at the same time is risky. For both you need your time.
