The French government has a wonderful history of supporting creative and socially constructive endeavors, even when they are not always aligned with narrow French interests. IMHO, we North Americans can learn a thing or two from their constructive management of the funding they undertake. The French government, for example, underwrites a huge portion of Visa Pour l'Image, which is a key institution in world photojournalism. And, the agency with which I am involved has had some great experiences with international projects funded by the French government.
