It was quite calm by comparison to the events after the soccer match. I never had problems to shot pictures etc. If you go to Tahrir you will find foreigners and it is easy of course to start a conversation and hang around with them. On lightstalkers are some fixers from Cairo as well, maybe you could contact them too? Be aware of the traffic and dont use black Taxis. Use the white ones. Have a nice trip, enjoy it. For me it was quite easy to enter Egypt, cuz I have a german ID so i didnt need a passport at all. I just bought a visa for 15US$ at the airport and this is it. I entered Egypt also as a 'tourist' and for 'other' reasons. So in the end, no problems at all either at the airport or in the streets. Any luck getting a press card from Maspero? It took me over a month but it has proved useful.
