Help needed - audio/ video sync problem with 5DMkII

Hi everyone,

I recently shot a video using 5d MkII at 25fps 1/50. The audio was recorded internally through a jacked-in lavalier.

Looking at the mov file now I just noticed that audio is out of sync with video, audio anticipates video by maybe a fraction of a second.

Does anybody have any idea on how to fix this?

(please take it kindly on me it the answer is "you have to reshoot everything")

Any help would be much appreciated...

Many thanks!

Load the clip into your video editing software of choice.
Seperate the audio from the video file and manually re-sync.

Seems strange that they would be out of sync, I shoot a lot of video on the mk II and I have never seen this problem.

Re: Help needed - audio/ video sync problem with 5DMkII

Ciao Tommaso,

buon lavoro

If you're using Final Cut, you can also use PluralEyes (http://www.singularsoftware.com/pluraleyes.html) to fix sync issues. I always use it to sync my audio to the video because I record the audio separately.

Are you sure they're really out of sync? Could it be a playback problem on either an under-powered computer or using an inappropriate NLE or codec? The sound would play back better than the audio... Did you have Magic Lantern on the 5D Mk II, by the way?

Dear all,

many many thanks for all your responses, I will try suggestions to fix this (lightstalkers rocks by the way).
I forgot to mention in my post that I am at reaaaally beginner level on the whole video/audio recording stuff, so maybe it's just lack of experience.
DPC, Daniel, your suggestion could be right, I will check if it's just a playblack problem.
I didn't know Magic Lantern and Pluraleyes (which probably testifies how little I know about video) they seem very helpful, thanks for the tips.

best to all,

Usually this is a performance problem. The out of camera codec is not optimized for editing. If you have apple computer try to convert the files into 720p or use a better codec like ProRes or Intermediate. Converting can be done with MPEG Streamclip, it is free.
