Great boat in Kashmir

Im going to Kashmir in March. Need a hookup for people to stay with. My 9year old daughter will be traveling with me. I will be writing and shooting so need easy cool people to stay with. Have you had a great experience amongst the masses of boats, touts etc.

Hi Richard,
I didn't have a 'great experience' with boat owners I stayed with, but you should be fine if you book ahead with a local agent (most Delhi travel agencies have good boat houses on lakes in Srinagar).
It might be bit more expensive than just getting there and finding someone trustworthy by yourself (which is doable if you can handle strong haggling ;), but -with your daughter- I'd go for something 'easier'. And you can always book a nice boathouse online for a few days and once you get a feel for the area, find something else by yourself.

And, maybe i shouldn't even say it, but be aware of political/military problems. My last time, there were riots in the markets and bombs blasts at post office & police headquarters.

Richard, with one very notable exception (whose name I can give you) I really wouldn't book ahead with a Delhi travel agent. If you contact me off-list I can give you the name of my fixer who will be able to help. All best, Stuart.

Matt Brandon, who used to live in Kashmir (now lives in Malaysia) recommends this guy: http://www.kashmirfamilyhouseboat.com/2011/03/kashmir-homestay-houseboat.html

According to Matt, he doubles as a fixer.

Okay, there is this family which owns couple of houseboats right next to Zero Bridge. Ask for the son, Sultan. They are a nice family and will take very good care of you. The neighborhood is also a very secure area plus it is on the Jhelum river so water much better than the stinky Dal lake.
