Sending prints to the US for exhibit

Hi all,

I was recently asked to send two prints in the US for an exhibit.
I'm on pretty tight schedule considering christmas post jam, so I'd like to avoid customs delay as much as possible.
Does anybody with experience sending from europe to the us knows how to handle customs declarations, dos and donts?
I've read that there is a $200 limit under which even commercial items are considered duty free, is it correct?

Thanks all for your replies

best

Hello Tommaso. I sent some photos unmounted a pair of years ago to a friend in NY and I only put photos as a gift. The prints were inside a cylinder. None problem. The question is what happen if you declare them as art or prints for an exhibition. I am curious too about the dos and don'ts.

My suggestion is to mark the value as under $10 and put gift. Make sure you get tracking for your package. If you use one of the services you should be fine...

Packages whose declared value is under $200 ($100 if being sent as a gift to someone other than the purchaser) will generally be cleared without any additional paperwork prepared by CBP. However, CBP always reserves the right to require a formal entry for any importation and generally exercises this option if there is something unusual about the importation, or if important documents such as an invoice or bill of sale do not accompany the item.

Hi Hernan, Damaso,

thanks for your replies...I just sent the prints unmounted in a cylinder, their value from the print lab is under $50, so I hope everything will work, I'll post feedback once I get it from the receiver.

Big hugs

Tommaso-

If you need those prints redone in a hurry, give Wayne at Elco Color (elcocolor.net) a shout. You can upload files and order online. They're located in New Jersey and are reasonably priced for the level of service.

Good luck.

Thanks Michael for the suggestion, they are in print already in LA, which was the final destination, but good to know anyway.
