Abby, I am not sure exactly what you are asking for, though It is eloquently spelled out in your posting, but if you or people you know are looking for photogs overseas who do documentary work and are willing to share some time, advice, encouragement, etc, then you should be able to find plenty of people on this site who fit the bill. Myself, I have shot in Asia, Europe, So. America, and now in the Caribbean, where I am basically consumed with my rather over ambitious project documenting the changes of a developing nation, and there is Teru, one of the LS founders, who has been just about everywhere and has done beautiful work in Tibet, Philip Blenkinsop also has incredible stuff from Asia, Stephen Ferry did a famous book on Bolivian miners, and there are many more collected here. Check out some of the galleries and you can send a direct ms. to the photogs whose work appeals to you, though some of them have not bothered to post a gallery, it is a start at least. These are busy people, so it may behoove you to contact them yourself and explain in greater detail what you need. good luck

Thank you Jon for your reply. I am looking for someone who can and want to take me on as their student or assistant with the specific purpose of mentoring me. The type of mentoring I want is the kind of work you have been doing. Right now I am funding my own trips (ouch, expensive for my budget) to find the stories and document them. Your suggestions are awesome. I will definitly use your advice.
The photos I posted are from a small town in Nicaragua. The men in this town are dying of kidney failure due to the pesticides they were exposed to while working in the sugar cane fields. As soon as the company finds traces of the disease in their blood (they have semi-annual physicals by the company doctors)they are fired with no access to medical care or prospects of another job. Whole families are dying off leaving the women widows and childless. This is the only form of employment for these familes leaving them in deeper poverty. The owner of the plantation is the most powerful and richest man in Central America (Carlos Pellas). So far I have not been able to find anyone willing to take on the story. I do not have any contacts anywhere in the jouralism world. I will continue to look for ways to find justice for these farmers but I cannot do it alone. If you have any ideas please pass them on.
This is the type of photography I want to dedicate my work to. The other portraits pay the bills.
