What's New at Lightstalkers (January '05)

Hi everybody! In case you haven't noticed, over the last couple months we've made a number of improvements, fixed some bugs, and added some new features. Here's an outline of what we've been working on!

_*Bugs Fixed*_

* Error when adding people to your Inner Circle -- FIXED

* Errors on the "Invite":invite.cfm page -- FIXED

_*Improvements*_

* There's now a "mini" version of the *Contact List*; this should be nice for those of you with lots of contacts.

* Your photo galleries now allow for captions. They show up as text in the pop-up window, and as rollover text everywhere else. They're totally optional.

* New and improved "Member Directory!":directory.cfm We now have over *1,100 registered users*, and it's a hell of a lot easier to find them now. Plus we've got handy Gallery and Map links, etc.

* Eugene did up a kickass new "Calendar":calendar.cfm -- looks great, and you can submit/correct entries to your heart's content. Mac or Sunbird users, you can subscribe via iCalendar!

* Read/unread status icons! Thanks for requesting this Teru, it's been real popular. It's a lot easier now to stay up-to-date with new posts.

_*New Features!*_

* Private messages -- you can now send a quick, private note to other Lightstalkers. (They get deleted automatically after 30 days.)

* Last, but not least, we have "The Map!":map.cfm If you've been wondering why there are latitude/longitude fields in "your Profile"editprofile.cfm, this is it. (Remember, we need your coordinates in *decimal format!*)

Cool huh? Remember, we need your feedback -- let us know if anything doesn't work, doesn't make sense, or is just plain missing. Thanks!

Very cool indeed!
The site just gets better and better.

However, the zoom function on the map doesn't seem to work in either of my Mac browsers
(Safari 1.2; Firefox 0.9.3 or IE 5.2.3)

Thanks

ditto the very cool.

As the site grows making individual icons for the catagories of the forums (Assignments, events, forsale ...) would give a little more information about what each post is, you can have a greyed out version of each icon for previously read posts as well. Or if you want a lot of work have the site save out last visit time and grey out all posts that are older (because we saw them before even if we didn't read them).

And, remove the Light Stalkers summary after a person is signed in. It takes a whole screen of scrolling to get past it.

Thanks for putting so much time into this.

Re: What's New at Lightstalkers (January '05)

Hi guys! Thanks for the input.

Johan, I think the map doesn't have "focus" by default; try clicking on it once with your mouse, and then using the keyboard tools. You can also click-and-drag to zoom in. (_If anyone knows an effective way to set the focus automatically, let me know!_)

David, the "welcome" UI is definitely something we're reviewing. You can expect to see improvements there. I'll forward your topic icon idea to Eugene!

Re: What's New at Lightstalkers (January '05)

Awesome -- but it wouldn't let me update my lat & long for the map icon to appear. No great shakes, can't imagine anyone here will be hopping over anytime soon (if so, I can give you directions).

Two questions: 1) how does a member know (as in what's the visual bitsie on one's profile page, I'd guess) if there is a private message stored on lightstalkers? I've recived e-mails from members here, but I'd guess that the privvy message stored here for 30 days is a different beastie? --and-- 2) what does the bold, capped, red UNVERIFIED mean specifically? I told a friend about lightstalkers & saw that for the first time when I added him to my contacts.

Thanks for this place & all you do to make it better 'n better.

Re: What's New at Lightstalkers (January '05)

heyo didi -- answering your questions:

1) I think you had trouble because you were entering coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds? Maporama provides both d/m/s format and *decimal* format -- I think you'll have better luck if you put the decimal format values in your profile. (I'm working on improving all this.)

2) "Unverified" refers to their email address; I've tweaked that to make it more clear. It's important for us to have a valid email address for every account; this is intended as gentle encouragement. :-)

Thanks everybody!
