Hi any one having any tips about ICP? gone start the photojournalism program this autum... would ve gratefull if anyone could give som tips about ICP and being a student in New York. best regards goran

print, shoot, print, shoot, print, shoot, and finally print... but that was ten years ago I guess now its shoot, download, photoshop, printe etc... I enjoyed it tremendously.

Alexl: there are many ICP grads here at Light Stalkers. Im certain many will answer your post. School, by the way, is one of the best in the world and has produce an extraordinary array of great photographers, indeed! :))...good luck :))...bob

I just registered today for Documentary Photography: Passion, Purpose, and the Personal Vision (August 7-11). Prof is AndrÃ© Lambertson. Anyone taken that class or a class with him? Thoughts? I'm really looking forward to it, esp since I have a grant that covers most of the cost :)

The ICP PJ course was the best thing that ever happened to me as regards photography. I learned to see again. It took months to shed my previous wire service experience though but once I did, ICP and the tutors there turned my photo world on its head. I went wide, shot close and lost my inhibitions allowing my humor to emerge. ICP is top of the league. At least it was for me. It's what you make of it ultimately. Remember to learn from the other candidates and not just the teachers. You'll be surprised what your colleagues will see in your work. Listen carefully. Take it all onboard. Try not to freelance if possible. Rather you should completely emerge yourself in you class assignments. Loose yourself in the course for the year with as little distraction from friends and family as possible and you will thrive. I had to shoot freelance assignments in order to eat and keep a roof over my head but I wish I didn't have to. I could have gotten so much more.

thank you so much paul! do you have any clue were to stay if you want to live cheap. bad neighborhods is not a problem, as long i dont have to cary weapons and so on ; )

train i gues i think i would be to tired in school after an hour on a bike but 30 minutes would be ok

Lightstalkers is a good place to find a roommate, ICP probably has a roommate board as well. You can also try www.craigslist.org, just be cautious. ICP is at 43rd street and 6th avenue, this is considered 'midtown', sort of in the middle of Manhattan. So from there you can go up or down about an hour..there is an amazing subway system in New York, so you will have a lot of options. If you go North, you might try Washington Heights or Harlem in the city, or Riverdale, Woodlawn, or Norwood neighborhoods in the Bronx. Go east in Queens to Long Island City, Forest Hills or Jackson Heights neighborhoods. Or to Brooklyn to Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, or Flatbush neighborhoods. There are closer, "nicer" places, but you said cheap. Do you know how little you want to pay monthly?

about 800 a month if possible but if i can get a room fore 400 thats 20 min more away from the school that would be ok aswell. i was there last month but it seemed to be quite expensive at manhattan...

For 800 you should be able to find a nice place, with one other roommate. For 400, try some of the above neighborhoods with 2 roommates..good luck!

Yes but for the $25,000 tuition you don't get an MA! For a lot less money there is the one year MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at The London College of Communication, London, UK directed by former Magnum photographer Paul Lowe.

Axel, ICP is really something you can look forward to. I went there in 2002/2003 and enjoyed it a lot. If you keep in mind that it's "only" a photo school and you don't drive yourself nuts while there you can learn a lot and make friends for life. As it is with all schools, it's all about what you make of it. When I first went to New York I first stayed with a friend and then moved to Bushwick. Very cheap there and I got mugged only once... Then I moved to Greenpoint, where I still live now. It's a good place. Shoot me an email if you have questions. C.

Hi Axel, I was at ICP last year, its a brilliant course and you will learn more in that one year than you can possibly imagine or really appreciate till afterwards. My advice is to take as many of the classes that you can (even when all you want is a weekend) and just work yourself silly for the year, just as Paul said, the less distractions you have outside of your photography for that year the better. The facilities are still amazing in all three printing areas and you will learn a lot by making use of all of them not just the digital. Finding a place for 800 dollars with a room mate should be no problem at all.... anyway any questions just ask away, like Christoph I live in Brooklyn, Giulietta

hey Axel, Much have been said but anyways giving my two cents. First of all, and this is only my opinion an MA, BA, CA, YMCA doesn't really matter if what you like is photography. The ICP is really great for having very good tutors, very interesting roll of students from very different countries which make you grow up first of all as a person, because your in touch with so many different cultures and people that the life experience makes you a better person, with all that and with great gear that they provide you, you also can become a better photographer. Being in NYC is also being in the center of the world, is not about the U.S. or any other country, is to live with the representation of pretty much every single country in the world. While i was there in 2004-2005 is was amazing how many great teachers, colleagues and workers of the ICP tougth me so much, i think i learned how to start seing with my heart instead of my eyes at the ICP and even i got out with less 20 grant in my pocket (which the inflation rate only keep going up) got out in an amazing amount of energy and much more focused on what i really want to photograph and spend my time on. As if living very far away for the money, honestely if you can i wouldn't advise you to live very far from the school. Bike after October until April forget it because you will freeze you ass. And if you put youself 100% inside of it, you will have some days of being so tired that you don't wanna be 1h30 inside of the train to get home, so use all your energy wisely, for your classes, for your parties, for your shoot, for your printing. When you think you are very tired, you need to think that it will only get worse until the last day of school in June... so don't burn yourself with meaningless things. Hope to have helped Joao

I am glad to hear such good things about ICP PJ program. I hope more than anything that it can be a center for all photographers while in New York. drop by anytime. We have the final exhibit of this year's students work opening on June 23 from 6-9 PM at ICP (1114 6th Avenue at 43rd Street). It will be open through August, so come by and check out the facilities. Come to the opening if you are around, it is free and fun. We even published a catalogue of student work this year called, SHIFT.

Hi Axel- I'm a photo editor at Outside Magazine and am helping Santa Fe Center for Photography to find emerging photographers for their photography competitions (www.sfcp.org) and I think ICP rocks!! I've taken classes and assisted classes there and am headed to their graduating student portfolio review at the end of this month where editors, publishers and agents meet individually with graduating photographers to look at and talk about their work and discuss their plans for the future,giving input and advice. In my experience, ICP is extremely valuable on many levels both for photographers and photo professionals. yahoo-great choice and good luck. And man, it's hard to find cheap housing but doable with roommates. I lived in Brooklyn the whole time I was in NYC and loved it--never wanted to live in Manhattan... Best! Brenda Milis
