Have you checked out Epson Filmscan F-3200 or Nikon LS 9000. They are smaller than imacon if you want to be able to travel with theme. On problem is, that at the passport controll, they often want to keep it for several days, Just to examine it.
Nikon i have tryed and are sattisfied with theme.

Re: Multi format scanner

I use a Minolta Dimage Multi Pro, I use it to scan my 6x7 material. The scans are excellent (assuming you are using good scanning software such as VueScan), at a good price, but I wouldnt say the scanner is exactly portable. Its about the size of a toaster.

Re: Multi format scanner

Arguably, I would say Creo and Imacon if you want to stay $20,000 and under.

If you can spend a lot more, the Cruse Synchron grand format scanner is a pearl, the archivists at The Vatican agree.

Microtec 12Of, I have this with silverfast software, excellent quality, and better for black and white negs than the other scanners (nikon ls 9000, minolta dimage) Same size as the others, but far better design, wouldn't call it portrable though. Very near Imacon quality (have had same negs scanned on each).

Re: Multi format scanner

About ls 9000 it's good but about portability: just if you go around with an assistant only to carry it. It weights around 20 kg and it's: 25cmx25cmx50cm.
One good thing about Nikon is that for color the digital ice is really good and for dusty countries that's a plus.
