FTP software for Mac

Here I am in Tokyo and found out that I would need to correct my mistakes on my web pages.
I am using my niece`s iBook G4 in Japanese, and I have managed to use the text editor to correct my mistakes in my 404.shtml file.
At home I use CuteFTP for windows, and I downloaded their demo version, but would not install on this Mac.
I am looking for free FTP software or cheap shareware? Any recommendations for the Mac?
Thanks in advance.
Tomoko

Believe it or not... Safari. Type the ftp address into the normal url address bar and you are rolling. It will mount the ftp on your desktop and you can browse away just like any other external disk.

Hello All

Thanks, all, for responding so quickly.
I downloaded Cyberduck, but it would not open even though it was installed.
Not only that , but also I am expereiencing the very bad jetlag

Hi again.

After I posted the above, I saw something on my desktop with Cyberduck. I clicked on it. It did something, and now the FTP client opened up correctly.
Now I have to figure out how to work this thing.
Thanks again, everyone.
Re: FTP software for Mac

Nathan,

After I struggled with Cyberduck, I noticed Safari on my desktop. It looks like Safari does only anonymous FTP, while I need to be able to do is to connect to my server to upload my corrected html files.
John and Chris
I was able to connect to the anonymous FTP server side of my site, but I have not figured out how to connect to the pub.html side. This requires the User ID and the password. I downloaded the Japanese version of Cyberduck. I was wondering whether I should have downloaded the full version.
Perhaps anyone else who might be able to help me uploading (or downloading) to the pub.html directory, please post a reply.
Thanks in advance.
Tomoko

Tomoko,

If you have Dreamweaver software, it has FTP capabilities. You'll still need User ID and password. But in anycase, your Server provider should be able to walk you through the steps to connect.

Hi Tomoko,
You can try to use Safari to connect to your password protected FTP by typing your login info in the following way into the address bar:
ftp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@YourFTPServerAddress
Hope that helps,
Robert
PS - Transmit is excellent, its what I use

Transmit is cheap, they have great tech support and it works well with .mac if you use that service.

rbrowser is shareware, but can be used as a good ftp client for free. look here: http://www.rbrowser.com/

My choice is transmit but either will work well for you.

Re: FTP software for Mac

Hi Robert
Thanks for your tips on how to connect using Safari. While I was able to connect, I could not upload the file to the server. I e-mailed my Web server for help.
Their FAQ and tutorials on FTP are assuming Windows, and not helpful to Mac users.
Since I have had issues of connecting to the control panel at my Web server, I think it would be best to get their opinions first before purchasing anything.z
Since this trip to Tokyo is partially a family visit, so I won`t be able to deal with this issue until I return from my visit of my father, more than one hour away, tomorrow.
Thanks to you all. It is great to have people chipping in from many corners of the world.
Tomoko

Re: FTP software for Mac

Tomoko, I suggest learning Dreamweaver.....once you have it set up its easy to make corrections using the built in FTP. You have one copy of your site on your HD, another on the remote server. You correct the files on your HD, then upload to your server, and you can test the changes locally, ie, open the site from your computer files and test them on your browser.

Tomoko-san,

http://www.rbrowser.com/download.html

has a fre mode (FTP Only) and a paid mode with more features.. they make a version for Tiger and Panther. Easy to use, drag and drop, full featured for a free app..

I use it all the time..

Re: FTP software for Mac

Thanks, everyone.
Lunarpages` reply was to use the Terminal, a text-based ftp client. They also suggested to google
for gui FtP clients that everyone is suggesting to use.
In short I looked up the needed commands by googling and was able to upload the corrected 404.shtml successfully. I am going back to bed to get a little more sleep before I really get up at 6:30 am.
I have tried Dreamweaver once although it was a trial version and did not like it. I much prefer to know what is behind it, so I use the text editor to type in html codes.
In any case I have certainly appreciated all your suggestions coming from every where. This is a great community.
Tomoko
P.S. If you need any info from Tokyo, Japan, don`t hesitate to ask me. Hopefully I`m heading to Kyoto for an overnight and a few other spots on this trip.

Photo Mechanic's ftp function has improved and is now pretty nice to use if you already have PM. For a standalone FTP client on MacOSX, I'd suggest trying out YummyFTP. Because it's a relative newcomer to the scene many people haven't heard of it, but already it seems more fully-featured than most of the competition, in my opinion, with some advanced features like folder-watching auto-upload folders, and image previews from within the application. There's a free full-feature 30day trial for download.

I also use Transmit - bought it online last week as well as a domain name and put my site up without too much trouble. I've found it really easy to use to update the site and read around first before deciding. I found that most pros use Transmit. Sometimes come to Tokyo, Tomoko - will you be there next month?
