Please join us as Bob Blancato, Ed Kashi, Kaja Snell, and Julie Winokur consider how documentary photography has reframed our perceptions of growing old and reshaped the way we view the elderly. Susan Meiselas will moderate. The Photography as Advocacy? forum series features photographers from the Open Society Institute*s documentary photography exhibition, Moving Walls. These forums analyze the role that photography plays in advocacy, the extent to which it is successful, and how those involved*as subject, photographer, or audience*perceive the work and the effect. They also consider how a photographer*s agenda influences the final project. Ed Kashi*s images are currently on display at the Columbia University School of Social Work. Bob Blancato is president of Matz, Blancato & Associates, Inc., a firm integrating public relations, government affairs, and advocacy services. He was staff director of the House Select Committee on Aging*s Subcommittee on Human Services from 1977 through 1988 and served as senior advisor until 1993. In 2000, he launched Caregivers Count, an online resource for non-partisan information on legislation and activities impacting caregivers and their families. Ed Kashi photographs appear regularly in National Geographic, the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic Monthly, LIFE, and U.S. News & World Report, among others. Years Ahead: Aging in America (PowerHouse, fall 2003) has garnered Kashi awards from the National Press Club, the National Press Photographers Association, the World Press, and Pictures of the Year. Susan Meiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976. She is the author and editor of several books, and her coverage of the insurrections in Central America and human rights abuses have been widely published throughout the world. In 1992 she was made a MacArthur Fellow. Kaja Snell holds a degree in Gerontology from the Andrus School at University of Southern California. She handled senior outreach for the Kerry Campaign and used the Aging in America materials at the Democratic National Convention Senior Caucus. Prior to that, she worked at Generations United. Julie Winokur stories have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times Magazine, Salon, Travel & Leisure, and many others. She is the writer and project director for Years Ahead: Aging in America (PowerHouse, fall 2003), a seven-year multi-media look at the impact of aging on society. Winokur's documentary film on the project was released in the fall of 2003. Whitney C.
