[Lightstalkers] iView Media Pro troubles http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles An entire Lightstalkers thread via RSS/XML. en-us iView Media Pro troubles Hi LS'ers, This is a copy of an e-mail I sent to iView support. Anyone else having the same problems??
Sir,
I run iView Media Pro on a Mac and everything was great until I upgraded to OSX10.4.7 and to iView 3.1.1
It seems I now have a lot of trouble with the description field and some characters. I use iView (among many other things) to insert text data into Photoshop CS1 files and to generate XML files I use for my website.
When I export the annotation to the Tiff file or when I generate an XML file, the © sign systematically shows up as: ¬© the é shows up as: √© the ' shows up as: ' or as : ‚Äô etc...
Very often the Description field will not show up when I open the Tiff file in Photoshop or, in the XML file, the
tag will not appear. Probably because iView adds the invisible sign ÿ 2000 times ahead of the actual caption, making it too long to be copied into the Caption field in Photoshop.
It is a real hassle to make the corrections manually in the XML files and I could really do without...
So the question is: where is the bug???? And mainly: when will it be fixed...
Thank you for responding swiftly. I know several people who have this problem, be it with CS1 or CS2.
It is weird this would happen after iView was bought by Microsoft. Please keep paying attention to Mac users. Thank you.
Best regards,
John Vink Wed, 12 Mar 2008 12:54:46 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles Re: iView Media Pro troubles hi John, I'm having it too, very annoying. And a quick check on the iview media pro user forum gave me this thread (but no real solution to be found here, just a workaround): http://forum.iview-multimedia.com/viewtopic.php?t=4718 apparently more people are having trouble with it. Let us know if you get an answer from them. cheers, bruno Sat, 05 Aug 2006 06:03:29 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36331 Re: iView Media Pro troubles hello John i work like this way Photo edit in PS CS2 caption or Description in Photomechanic small aplication and you can do it collective or in batch the file info and than i rename the files in bridge of PS and only the archive in iViewPro. If you have question be free to call i am on skype by this address upa_photo Robert Sat, 05 Aug 2006 08:54:55 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36336 Re: iView Media Pro troubles John, it could be some kind of weird text encoding conversion bug of some kind. Are you using a computer with an "exotic" language installed (say, cambodian input, for example) ? have you tried downgrading to the previous version of iView, and is it a possibility ? have you tried repairing permissions / restarting in safe mode (which does a thorough disk check ? Sat, 05 Aug 2006 20:17:59 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36395 Re: iView Media Pro troubles Thanks guys... Robert, I don't have CS2 and Bridge but CS1 (someone I know has the same problem on CS2). Photomechanic doesnt do what iView can. I use iView since 5 years without a problem... Matthias, I have no 'exotic' language installed (still don't speak Khmer properly after 6 years...). I tried the permissions check already, but that was not really usefull because I have the problem on both my iMac and my Powerbook, and I'd be surprised to have permission problems on both machines. But the problem persists. I installed the previous version of iView (3.1 instead of 3.1.1) and it is even worse. Now all the file info is gone from the Photoshop Tiff file except the © field... It's giving me a headache... Do you have Spell Catcher ( http://www.rainmakerinc.com/ ) installed and running? If so, try disabling it with iView and see if that helps. Good luck, jack Sun, 06 Aug 2006 05:08:10 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36432 Re: iView Media Pro troubles I have not something like Spell Catcher but I have the same problem that have John Vink. I try Special Characters but have only parcial results in the copyright simbol. Any idea? Sun, 06 Aug 2006 05:56:47 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36437 Re: iView Media Pro troubles In my experience if you use special characters and symbols like "é", "©", "ç", "à", accents, etc in IPTC caption it gets screwed up. I don't use iview to import my captions (I'm a Photomechanic addict) but I saw similar effects when my captions are being viewed in different applications. And each application gave a different appearance to those characters. Now I avoid using those characters, even if I have to write someone's name wrong... Better to see 'Pele' instead of "Pel,ô" when it has to be "Pelé". I have this MySql and PHP based web-application and this can't handle "strange" characters either. I think it has something to do with the Unicode nature of the characters and the compatibility with IPTC/XMP and the different apps, but I'm not an expert on this subject. And Photomechanic handles IPTC captioning to RAW and TIFF files better then iview, check out their demo and give it a try. You can find more info on how they handle captioning with RAW and TIFF in this link: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-7887-8053 Sun, 06 Aug 2006 09:05:09 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36442 Re: iView Media Pro troubles Jon, The original post on the i-view forum that bruno decock mentioned was mine. Since then, i-view technical support have been pretty good in following this up. I've sent multiple files over to them, both 'synchronised back to originals' and 'clean'. To be honest, I get the impression that they were a bit shocked... I sense that it's some kind of scripting problem with the new build of the current version. Like you, I've used i-view for a while with no problems and will be very disappointed if I have to use Bridge for everything, which I find rather clunky. The problem is, if this is not fixed, then i-view just becomes an expensive catalogue programme which is not all that it is designed for. I think selling to Microsoft isn't at the root of this but is a bit ironic. I'm going to wait for i-view to keep me posted before I switch but in the meantime, if I hear anything new, I'll let you all know. Just reload version 3.1.1 and it should be working. Good luck. http://www.cuk.ch/index.php (in French) Tue, 08 Aug 2006 08:37:40 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36621 Re: iView Media Pro troubles Dear Antoine, >version 3.1.1 build 42B8 should correct this problem Unfortunately not true. I have that build and on i-view's instruction re-installed. I-view now know that this doesn't work... Bestest Stuart Tue, 08 Aug 2006 12:10:04 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36640 Re: iView Media Pro troubles This has just been posted on the i-view forum from the tech. people: -- We are looking into this problem. The odd characters are due to Photoshop showing unicode legacy IPTC characters. They are unicode and that doesn't seem to be what Photoshop is expecting. Normally you would expect Photoshop to display the IPTC/XMP core since MediaPro has synced both. So we've asked Adobe why this might happen and how we might avoid it happening. Apple's Preview application only writes legacy IPTC, as far as I know in the current version. If you add a keyword with an extended character, like a copyright symbol in Preview, then you will see the same odd extra character in Photoshop. With us it's a bit different, we write both and you would expect each application to show IPTC/XMP core if it can and legacy IPTC if that is all it can support. For some reason, sometimes, Photoshop seems to ignore the IPTC/XMP core and display the legacy IPTC and that is what we need to avoid. _________________ Phil. iView Multimedia Ltd. ---- So it looks like it's an issue with Adobe as much as anything. Let's hope this gets fixed. Stuart Wed, 09 Aug 2006 15:26:39 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36796 Re: iView Media Pro troubles Stuart, thanks for the feedback. Maybe you can ask 'Phil' the following question: if it is a Photoshop problem then why do I get these character problems when I do an export from iView to an XML file? I sent two emails to iView support but did not even get an acknowledgment. Wed, 09 Aug 2006 21:11:24 +0000 http://www.lightstalkers.org/iview_media_pro_troubles#36839
