Server errors explained

Hey everybody -- I'm sure a lot of you have noticed the occasional errors that sometimes crop up on the site. I of course try to fix everything permanently, but it looks like some of them are going to continue to come up, so here's a short explanation for you curious types.

Some errors are caused by bad code -- bugs. When you encounter a bug, you'll get a message to the effect of *The action or page you requested has caused an internal error. This is not your fault, and a detailed error report has been emailed to us; we'll address this problem ASAP.* It's true -- the server sends us email to tell us there's a problem, and I try to fix it right away. Sometimes I'll even send you an email to tell you it's fixed. Mwah.

Other errors, however, are "physical" -- sometimes the server has to reboot for routine maintenance purposes, and sometimes it runs out of memory and craps out. Our hosting provider's really good about minimizing this, but it happens. This causes the *Could not connect to JRun server* error, for example. When this happens, go get a cup of coffee -- in about five minutes, the server will be back up and running.

This occasional reboot thing isn't something we can fix right away, unfortunately. If we had loads of dough we'd get a backup server -- but we're not quite there. In the meantime, just know that it'll be back shortly, I feel your pain, and virgins await you in heaven...

So, I know this is blunt, but how do you pay for all this cool stuff?

At the moment, we're living on love -- we're all volunteers and hosting is donated by Kuwayama Design (my day job). This won't last, naturally; in order to guarantee the future of the site, we'll have to find some revenue. We're working on that. (In the past people have asked if they can donate to the cause, but we're steering clear of that for various reasons.)

Is there any way to edit the travel history (beyond the delete function), in case we mis-input dates or forgot to add a trip?
