Madrid Workshop on Trauma and Journalism

Madrid Workshop on Trauma and Journalism

Date 4 October, 2006
Description With the Iraq war, the Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the Madrid train bombings, and with stories of trauma closer to home and to everyday journalism, news people and their employers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of understanding trauma and emotional distress.

How does psychological trauma affect the communities and nations we report? What impact does it have on us as media workers? What are the implications for the reporting of trauma, and for training and education?

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, in partnership with Spanish arm of Reporters without Borders and the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) will hold a day-long workshop, in Spanish and English, Oct. 4, 2006.

The one-day workshop will be followed by a two-day ESTSS workshop—October 5-6 at San Lorenzo del Escorial—that will explore in more detail the experience and treatment of trauma, and how journalists and mental health professionals can best work together.

The workshop follows similar events in recent years in Berlin, Zagreb, Istanbul, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Belfast. There will be a €100 charge for attending the Wednesday workshop, and unless otherwise agreed, those travelling on to el Escorial will need to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.

Location Madrid, Spain
More Info To reserve a place please contact mark.brayne@dartcentre.org.
