<title>Re: NYT Magazine - Call for Entries Deadline: June 15, 2005</title>
<description>Whats the situation regarding the recent NYT contract dispute?

Could the recent attempt by the paper to grab additional rights from photographers have anything to do with their new found interest in student contributors?

Just curious.

<description>Looks like you need to be a student, not sure exactly though. The mention of the contract is an interesting one didn't consider that. Hopefully that's not the route they are going. Saw this call for entries and thought it might be of interest but would advise checking any &quot;small print&quot; to see what they have in mind.

Cheers,

<description>The NYT contract is for the newspaper and does not apply to the magazine.</description>

<title>Re: NYT Magazine - Call for Entries Deadline: June 15, 2005</title>
<description>Fair enough, I haven't been keeping close tabs on the NYT contract dispute and assumed it applied across the board.

The reason I asked though, is there do seem to be a slew of competitions doing the rounds with 'small print' that we should read very carefully.

Some of them are basically glorified rights grabs, an attempt to construct a photo-library by the back door or an attempt to recruit students or amateur photographers to undercut the fees of existing photographers.

One example - the NGO Medicos Del Mundo (the Spanish version of Medicins Du Monde recently ran a photo-comp which I was going to enter - till I read the Terms and Conditions. Basically it said all entries (not just the winners) would become the property of MDM, to do with as they saw fit.

Now, I'm all in favour of doing the right thing for NGO's and charities, but this was a blatant attempt to construct a photo-library on the sly - and the irony was that the theme of the competition was something like 'people without rights'...hey man, what about our rights?

I also have nothing against students or amateur photographers - they can walk into a paper or magazine and pitch a story or show their work like any other photographer...after all, getting play is good for the ego - but charge the same fees please - some people do this for a living.

Just something to think about as photo fees go down and down, and the cost of those sexy 14 megapixel cameras goes up and up...

Thanks,

<description>I'm really surprised about this contest for &quot;students of photography who are the potential stars of the next generation&quot;.

What does photography have in common with &quot;potential stars&quot;?

<description>Yes, I agree, and the New York Times Magazine who is almost completely responsible for the rise of one Sebastio Salgado, wouldn't know one if they tripped over him or her anyway.
