Anarchy Images and Art Start needs Your Help

Anarchy Images has partnered with a program called Art Start (www.art-start.org) to teach photojournalism and Documentary photography to low income and “At Risk”, inner city teens. The focus of the project is to show that these teens have the power to initiate personal and social change while teaching kids to be observant of the media. The program itself takes place in Manhattan but the students come from all five boroughs of New York City. I personally will be teaching the 8-10 week course but additional volunteers/mentors are welcome. The Photography program is being done as part of the Media Works Project at Art Start. We currently have the budget for 1 entry level digital SLR and could really use everyone’s help In order to get this project off the ground we could use your help. We are seeking any monetary donations, used working equipment donations, and volunteers. You can donate online at: http://www.art-start.org/donate2.php For equipment donations and to volunteer please contact Art Start (www.art-start.org) For a city with something like 20,000 photographers, multiple newspapers, dozens of magazines and photo agencies, there are remarkably few programs like this around. With that in mind, I ask everyone that works at any of the before mentioned (Yes even another photo agency) to bring this program to the attention of your employer or agent. You could even point out that if a small agency like Anarchy Images could get involved, why can’t they Either way, it’s a great program with some wonderful kids that could use your help. You can even ask that your donation go to any of the programs run by Art Start. Art Start Programs include: 1. Art in the shelters (volunteers teach art to children in homeless shelters) 2. The hip Hop Project (3 year program that teaches all aspects of the music industry to low income, inner city kids) 3. The Media Works Project a. The Photography Program (Teaches basic photography, photojournalism and documentary photography) b. The Design Program (Teaches web design and magazine layout) c. The Writing Program (Teaches journalism and writing) d. The Video Program (Teaches filmmaking and editing) 4. The Mentor Project (Teams Volunteer Mentors with homeless children) All donations go directly to Art Start Art Start is a registered Non-profit Anarchy Images operates solely in a Volunteer organizer and donator capacity. ART START IS A GREAT GREAT PROGRAM!!!!!!!! :))))))))))))...ive friends who helped out in the early/mid 90's..... .if i were in the city, my wife and i would definitely help out and Im thrilled you guys are helping: major props and respect for y'all! :)))))...i'll send a donation at the end of the month (small $$) when i make my next LS donation. Good for you!!!! I've worked for similar programs in the states before and my wife has taught art to children here in Toronto in similar programs: and damn it, if it doesnt teach the photographers what's really important, and it aint our fucking galleries/web pages!!!!, i dont know what will!! ;))))) Great job and NY photogs, you should totally support Jason and especially the ART START program! :))))) good luck and big cheers!!! bob

Thanks Bob! It's a great program, worked with them the year before last and on the project and want to get it going again. It's a great Group of kids!

damn... just want to voice my support... awesome work.. wish i had more to donate..... i swear video saved me and my skater buddies from falling to shit when we were younger..to imagine ourseveles part of a bigger network.. to have a voice...anywho..the benefits of these tools with youth groups are exponential..... i can only imagine what good will come.... awesome possum.. best of luck...

Why not extend this program to other cities on the continent? I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to contribute their time if the organizers cut through the paperwork and offered some basic administrative support to self-starting groups elsewhere. It's easier for some to offer time rather than money, and they might even want to be part of the whole process.

I would love to extend the project but I am just coming on as a contributor and volunteer. And in order to get any funding we would need to show that the project was a success in other places. Additionally, Art Start is based out of NYC but I will check to see if they have connections with other established organizations in other cities. We would also need to show that there are people interested in facilitating and volunteering in other cities. Anyone that might be interested in facilitating a project like this in their city can post here and I will get the info to Art Start to help find an organization to partner with. Thanks for the suggestion Aleph and thanks for the show of support Ethan It's not just cash we need, we could use used working equipment, volunteer mentors, volunteer guest speakers, and space to show the kids work. The commitment can be as little as a couple of hours to tell the kids about what you do. Thanks again for the support guys.

HI Jason: I volunteered with Art Start for Art in the Shelters last summer...it was an amazing experience. It would be a priviledge to volunteer w/ the photgr. program as well....thanks for the info, and your support for this very necessary program in the city! I will tell you from experience, it WORKS!!! The kids benefit SO MUCH, i saw kids transformed from their time w/ artstart..WAY TO GO MAN!!!!

Hey Patrick (and all) - We're still going strong, Anarchy is just experiencing some web-host issues. Thanks for checking in on us though! Look for us as good as new, and at Perpignan, soon enough.
