World Affairs Journalism Fellowships

Up to 12 journalists from community daily newspapers in the United States can apply for this fellowship to report and write anywhere in the world for one to three weeks. The World Affairs Journalism Fellowship is aimed at “gatekeeper” editors – working journalists who largely determine what news ends up in their papers. The program will allow participants to design their own overseas story assignments and probe global issues of direct interest to their communities.

The Simon Cumbers Media Challenge Fund

The Simon Cumbers Media Challenge Fund is a funding scheme aimed at assisting journalists to cover the main issues of development/human rights, principally for an Irish audience. There are two grant types, standard grants and TV production seed grants.

Standard grant applications will be accepted from local/national community radio stations, independent radio producers, photographers and photo journalists, freelance and staff journalists, newspapers, and new media producers. TV production seed grants are intended to help individuals prepare an application to be presented to the major funding organisations. Applications will be accepted from independent production companies, directors, producers and broadcasters. Joint applications and partnerships are encouraged.

A number of Issues could be addressed including: education, health, migration, nomadic peoples, environment, women and development, globalisation, trade, agriculture, refugee flows, sustainable development, war and conflict, local development, HIV/AIDS, and the role of aid.

Rory Peck Training Fund Bursaries

This fund exists for the sole purpose of providing bursaries to enable freelance media workers worldwide to take safety training courses. Courses should be booked directly through the approved course providers: AKE Ltd , Centurion Risk Assessment Services , Objective Team Ltd. (Hostile Environments) and Bruhn NewTech (CBR).

Who is eligible?

Any freelance media worker worldwide (broadcast or print) who has been working as a freelance for a minimum of 18 months.

How much are the bursaries?

Approximately 75% on course costs (max. £750, approximately US$1330), which is paid directly to the course provider.

Reuters Foundation Fellowships at Oxford University

RIAS Awards

The RIAS Berlin Commission offers cash awards for excellence in reporting on German/American issues. Prizes are awarded in three categories: radio, television and new media. The entries must deal with aspects of German/American relations in the fields of politics, economics, social issues, cultural developments, history or current events. The Commission allots $10,000 to be divided among the winners in the three categories. The winning journalists will also receive an expense-paid trip to the awards ceremony in Berlin in June 2007.

RIAS Berlin is a binational organization established in 1992 to maintain German/American understanding in the field of broadcast journalism. It honors the 46-years of Berlin’s “Radio in the American Sector” during the Cold War. The RTNDF administers the American side of the RIAS Berlin German/American Journalist exchange program. RTNDF is a non-profit journalism research, education and training institution affiliated with the Radio-Television News Directors Association. RTNDA serves the electronic journalism industry and news professionals in the U.S. and worldwide.

The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2007, for work that aired or originated between January 1 and December 31, 2006. There is no entry fee. Pieces may be of any length.

Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowship

Participants will study at any one of a series of academic or research institutions in North and South America. Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism

The Carter Center in Atlanta, GA provides six one-year fellowships for journalists to study a selected topic regarding mental health or mental illnesses. The Fellowships are designed to enhance understanding of mental health issues and combat stigma and discrimination. Each journalist awarded will receive a $10,000 stipend. Applicants must have at least three years experience in print or electronic journalism, submit an application packet (packet found online), and attend orientation and presentation meetings in September at the beginning and end of the Fellowship year. Society of Environmental Journalists Awards

The Society of Environmental Awards recognize the very best journalism on environmental subjects in newspapers, magazines and newsletters and on television, radio and the Internet. You don’t have to be an SEJ member or an environment specialist to enter. Reporters who cover health, politics, science, energy, local government or any other beat are encouraged to enter their work on environmental subjects. Students may enter work that was published or broadcast in a media outlet accessible to the general public. SEJ welcomes entries from outside the U.S., but non-English entries must be accompanied by a complete and accurate English translation.

US$1,000 prizes will be handed out in nine categories.

Sundance Documentary Fund

The Sundance Documentary Fund is dedicated to supporting international documentary films and videos focused on current and significant issues and movements in contemporary human rights, freedom of expression, social justice, and civil liberties. The Fund only accepts projects dealing with contemporary issues, and does not accept historical projects, biographies, or series. Individuals from around the world may apply with documentary film or video projects that range in length from full broadcast hour to long format feature. Applicants must have creative and budgetary control over the proposed documentary. The Sundance Documentary Fund is extremely competitive and only a fraction of submitted proposals will be funded. Quality of work samples, strength of proposal, potential for broad international distribution, and the issue’s significance are elements heavily weighed during the review process. Swedish Bilateral Scholarships

Journalists in some countries can apply for scholarships to Swedish universities for research, study or training. The bilateral exchanges currently cover these countries: Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania and Russia. Organized by the Swedish Institute.

The scholarship pays SEK8,000 per month for eight months. Those with doctoral degrees receive SEK12,000. The funds cover the expenses of one person only. Applicants must be fluent in English or proficient in Swedish.

Applications can be submitted at Swedish embassies in the countries listed above. Deadlines vary, but applications should be submitted one year before studies would start.

Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism

The Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism help dedicated professional journalists acquire knowledge to cover the environment more effectively and enrich the public’s understanding of this crucial subject. Five fellowships are awarded each year to full-time U.S. print or broadcast journalists interested in deepening their knowledge of environmental issues. The program covers tuition and fees and also pays a $40,000 stipend for the 9-month academic year at the University of Colorado at Boulder, which runs from mid-August to mid-May. Applicants may include reporters, editors, producers and full-time freelancers. They must be U.S. citizens, have a minimum of five years of full-time professional journalism experience and have completed an undergraduate degree. Prior experience covering the environment is not necessary. To apply, submit a completed application form (available online) together with a résumé, work samples, an intellectual autobiography, a projected study plan for the academic year and three letters of recommendation, including one from a current supervisor. U.S.-Austria Journalism Exchange Fellowship

The U.S. – Austria Journalism Exchange Fellowship, jointly administered by the International Center for Journalists and the Kuratorium für Journalistenausbildung (KfJ) in Salzburg, Austria, grants two U.S. journalists and two Austrian journalists the opportunity to spend six weeks in each other’s countries, working as “foreign correspondents” for their hometown news organizations. The program includes a brief orientation program in Washington, DC followed by six weeks in which fellows will work at host newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations in each other’s countries, while simultaneously reporting on events for their employers back home. The program ends with a two day debriefing session in Vienna, Austria.

This program aims to foster greater understanding and knowledge of both countries among future media leaders and their audiences. During their stay fellows will learn more about their host country and its media through meetings and appointments with business, government, industry, and media leaders.

Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 38 and be employed by a newspaper, news magazine, broadcast station, or news agency. (Freelance journalists may also apply) Applicants must have demonstrated journalistic talent with at least three years of experience, and a strong interest in U.S.‑European affairs. Foreign language proficiency is not required, but it is strongly preferred and will be taken into consideration during the selection process.

United States-Japan Foundation Media Fellows Program

The United States-Japan Foundation Media Fellows Program allows American and Japanese journalists to gain professional experience in Japan and the U.S., respectively, with the goal of encouraging more knowledgeable, in-depth news coverage of each country. Each year, the program sends four American journalists to Japan and hosts two Japanese journalists in the U.S. The Japan Society works closely with the International House of Japan and the Foreign Press Center to tailor each two-month residency to the Fellows’ needs. University of Hawaii Asia Fellowships Program for Journalists

University of Michigan Media Award for Excellence in Coverage of Women and Gender

The Institute for Research on Women and Gender administers the University of Michigan Media Award for Excellence in Coverage of Women and Gender. Two awards are granted annually, one for print media and one for radio/television. Submissions should meet at least one of the following criteria: coverage of neglected, underrepresented issues of concern to women; coverage that appreciates and emphasizes the gender aspects of a particular issue or event; that challenges gender-based stereotypes, including stereotypes about feminism and feminist politics; that brings a fresh, feminist perspective to familiar stories; that offers excellent coverage of academic research on gender. Through the Visby program, the Swedish Institute offers grants for scholarships or research projects at Swedish universities. There is no age limit and students of all levels can apply.

Individual scholarships are available for periods from one month to two years. They cover the costs of travel to and from Sweden, plus food and lodging during the study period. Most of these go to students from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. For the project grants, academic networks in Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and Russia are eligible.

Those who have been Erasmus fellows are not eligible. Fluency in English is required, and women are encouraged to apply.

Visiting Fellows Program – Freedom House

World Press Photo of the Year Award

Every year World Press Photo invites press photographers and photojournalists throughout the world to participate in the World Press Photo Contest. All entries will be judged for their news value and for the creative skills of the photographer. For stories and portfolios the editing of the entered material will also be taken into account.

In each category both the photographer of the best single picture and the photographer of the best picture story/portfolio will receive a Golden Eye Award, a cash prize of EUR 1,500, and an invitation to Amsterdam to attend the awards ceremony in April 2004 (including one return flight ticket and hotel accommodation). Winners of second and third prizes and honorable mentions will receive the foundation’s Golden Eye Award and a diploma. Photographers who have not won prizes, but whose work has been selected for the yearbook and/or exhibition, will receive a certificate recognizing their outstanding skill and a copy of the yearbook.

A lot of photojournalists in Asia (as Indonesia) have great pictures, but they have no opportunities to get more experience.
