film recovery-scanning where to start?

yellow
im trying to recovery all my negative and slide collection (about 50.000) shoots from my work Any one’s suggestion in how and what scanners are people using to protect and building their archive from their work?
the different prices and options dont help on finding the best scanner to re-born the old work and probably to allow shooting once in a while on film?

best and thanks

I have heard that Nikon dedicated film scanners are the best, though I use Canon flatbed scanner to scan my 35mms. Whats the format of your negatives btw?

It really depends on your budget… Imacons are the best if you can afford them, Nikons come in second to that – but are much more affordable. I have a Nikon Coolscan 9000, and it works great for me. If you don’t have medium format to scan, you can just use a Coolscan 5000…

I have the Nikon Coolscan V which I’ve used for the past 3 yrs to scan my chromes and negs. The price was right for a dedicated scanner and I was happy with the results.

Though for 50K images, yomay want to hop on something sturdier like the 5000 as mentioned above.

Hi Alex,

I use a Canon flat-bed scanner which has facilities to scan negatives too. It is Canon 4200F and gives the max resolution of 3200dpi. Since I don’t print above 8X12 it gives me pretty good result. It also allows you to do shadow-highlight adjustments while scanning. So it works for me. However if you can afford a dedicated negative scanner better should go for it.

Regards

Santanu
