by oscar siagian | 08 Dec 2007 16:12 | yogyakarta, Indonesia |
please do. Im the organizer; Im hoping to reach as many people as possible. Ron Haviv just signed on as well to teach; our lineup now is getting big-but is amazing. Everyone is volunteering to teach; we are hoping to get the word out. LS has been an awesome sponsor; hopefully all those who want to attend will be able to…right now there is not a set limit on enrollment, but that may have to change depending on student numbers…

by Eric Beecroft | 08 Dec 2007 16:12 | Salt Lake City, United States |
thanks for your information eric, i’m far away from mexico, i’m based at indonesia. will spend a alot of money to get in mexico. but i will try first to get the scholarship.

by oscar siagian | 08 Dec 2007 17:12 | yogyakarta, Indonesia |
I am certainly interested in this and I have been telling everyone I know at school and have got others interested as well. It is surely an impressive list of instructors and the price can’t be beat.

by Narayan Mahon | 08 Dec 2007 17:12 | Syracuse, United States |
Great job Eric! :))...it looks terrific: instructors, price, commitment, philosophy! :)))...what a terrific opportunity for y’all :))

best of luck!
cheers

by sudhanshu malhotra | 10 Dec 2007 05:12 | new delhi, India |
The number of scholarships is as yet undetermined; however, there will be at least 3 tuition scholarships, likely more, as well as some half tuition scholarships. There are 3 types – one is economic need, one is portfolio based, and one is for a Lightstalkers member. All the application info is on the website.

by Eric Beecroft | 10 Dec 2007 16:12 | Salt Lake City, United States |
Hi – Would like to come from the UK. What are the proposed dates?

Sounds amazing – all the best

by Brian L Frank | 11 Dec 2007 18:12 | San Francisco, United States |
According to the website, the porfolio submission is due by Xmas but the LS award deadline is in March. The LS award requires a written part in addition to the portfolio for submission. Is that correct?

by BillyV | 13 Dec 2007 15:12 | Lao Chai, Vietnam |
This workshop sounds amazing. I’m assuming that much of the work that attendees will be doing will be self-initiated, but am wondering what type of brainstorming we can do ahead of time… For me, there will be a language barrier in addition to the normal scrambling that ensues when you’re developing a story. Any thoughts on this?

by William Widmer | 13 Dec 2007 21:12 | San Francisco, United States |
William, use your body language, use your hands, your feet, your face, your smile, your charm, use your eyes, your expression… you will make people happy, you will be happy.

by Stefan Rohner | 13 Dec 2007 22:12 | Ibiza, Spain |
Need a camera or can I stupidly do without?

by Stupid Photographer | 13 Dec 2007 22:12 | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
Stupid, you go there with a shoe box and a hole in it, a good photographer needs nothing else. ;) good night.. ( here in europe ).

by Stefan Rohner | 13 Dec 2007 22:12 | Ibiza, Spain |
Stupid smile back at ya, always! :-)

by Stupid Photographer | 13 Dec 2007 22:12 | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
William-

The workship will have both Spanish and English classes, depending on instructor and availability of translation.
As far as pre-workshop brainstorming, sure. If you want to PM me I can have you contact some of the instructors and you can bounce some ideas off of them. Alot of it will be self selected stories; it really depends on the class you take. Some may have themes; these photogs are pretty amazing and can definitely point you in a variety of directions. I can say that the more you have story idea-wise floating in your head, the better. Of course being open to the stories surrounding you is also very helpful; DF is amazing city and you may be simply frustrated since there is so much to shoot there.

by Eric Beecroft | 14 Dec 2007 02:12 | Salt Lake City, United States |
Hey Will,

A crew of us from SF are goin…

Get in touch and we can go over some ideas.

You probably already know a couple of us from the SFSU crew….

Email me, or give me a ring, and we’ll get some ideas goin.

by Brian L Frank | 14 Dec 2007 06:12 | San Francisco, United States |
I’m definitely going to this workshop. Sounds amazing.

Brian – Would love to meet the SF crew, I’m thinking about going to SFSU for PJ, would you have some time to give me some advice?

by matt | 17 Dec 2007 20:12 | San Francisco, United States |
I would really like to go to this as well, I have never done a workshop before, hell, I am not even a photojournalist but I LOVE photography, especially the idea of telling stories with photography. Do you think it’s the sort of thing for a non-journalist as well? I do know my way around a camera and other tools involved however, I am just not a working photog…

Jim

by James Panzer | 17 Dec 2007 23:12 | Arizona, United States |
Hey Will, how are are ya? I plan on attending as well, so give me a call. The SF crew should get in contact so we can figure out travel ideas. I’d like to roadtrip down?

It was nice meeting you Eric at the VII Workshop, see you in Mexico.

by Nicole Franco | 18 Dec 2007 00:12 | san francisco, United States |
Jim- you are more than welcome to attend, and I think youll get alot out of it. no need to be a working photog to attend.

Nicole- nice to meet you as well; Ill see you in mexico.

by Eric Beecroft | 18 Dec 2007 04:12 | Salt Lake City, United States |
when the nyt internship application gets chewed up and spit back at me i’ll bee 100% in. right now i’m hovering around 99%

looks incredible.. would love to discuss the format of these international workshops.. anybody care to share what is involved?

@ the SFSU crew: i took 3rd at one of your photo invitationals a couple years back while i was attending USF ;) still using that copy of photo mechanic! hope you’re all well and shooting!

by Matthew Craig | 18 Dec 2007 05:12 | Boston, Ma, United States |
This sounds like a great program and I know a lot of the people coming to teach—they are great shootera and I am sure they will do a great job down there. Because I am in the midst of putting something together here in New Orleans on very short notice, I know exactly how much work this takes. Folks, there is no magic wand we can make to make this happen, no sponsorship buttons to click.

In so much as Eric and I could possibly be duplicating efforts I would offer any assistance that I possibly can on this.

by Andy Levin | 18 Dec 2007 19:12 | New Orleans, United States |
andy-

thanks for the support. it is alot of work; people have been super generous with their time and talents, and our sponsors very supportive and kind as well- but sponsorship is not what people think it is, Im afraid. No one writes a blank check. everything that comes in goes straight to the workshop. the response has been great; though hopefully even more will sign up and benefit.

by Eric Beecroft | 18 Dec 2007 19:12 | Salt Lake City, United States |
Will, Matt, Matthew, Nicole and any other interested bay area shooters….

Trying to put together a little gathering so we can go over carpooling, lodging options etc…. and meet each other and drink some beers.

Grab my email off my LS page and send me an email and Ill add you to a list we have going of participating bay area shooters, so we can get this thing together.

by Brian L Frank | 19 Dec 2007 21:12 | San Francisco, United States |
Just an update to the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop in Mexico City June 16-21, 2008.

First, we are very excited to have Ron Haviv signed on as an instructor (schedule dependent).

Second, due to the fact that staff will be out of the country during much of March, the deadlines have changed a bit: Scholarship Application Deadline is February 15, 2008. Winners will be announced end of February. Early Tuition Deadine is March 1st. After this date the tuition goes up.

Thanks and we’re excited to have y’all attend.

hi I’m a little concerned an about the submittion of the entries.
like i want to sent 10 images and each jpeg comes out to be of 2MB each could be difficult to send all of them in one go…....
pls help

by sudhanshu malhotra | 20 Dec 2007 16:12 | new delhi, India |
I dont think that you need to submit high-rez files sudhanshu.

I will likely resize all my images down to 72 dpi, 10 inch wide side and email them in on a compression of 8 or 9… this should give a small enough file to email, but big enough to view well on a computer screen. (unless Eric states otherwise)

PM me if you are unsure of how to do this.

by Brian L Frank | 20 Dec 2007 19:12 | San Francisco, United States |
this is going to be the best. Who else is thinking of coming from london? i’m definitely down.

by Ben Thomas | 21 Dec 2007 16:12 | london, United Kingdom |
Hi Ben

I’d like to go from London, maybe for 2 weeks as flight will be most expensive part. Let me know if you fancy meeting up over a drink to chat about it.

This is going to be a blast! If there’s anyone else from Brazil who wants to attend, please let me know… how about a road trip throughout Latin America? Just kidding… but if there’s anyone crazy enough, I’m in!

Paulo.

by Paulo Fehlauer | 28 Dec 2007 14:12 | São Paulo, Brazil |
Hell yeah Paulo, thats what Im talkin about… Im headed all the way south after the workshop with another shooter via car…. so we could do the second half of yer round trip with 2 cars…. much safer! and yes, I am crazy! Shoot me a PM and keep me posted if you really end up driving all the way up.

by Brian L Frank | 28 Dec 2007 18:12 | San Francisco, United States |
Count me in Palo and Brian, I’m totally up for a road trip across Latin America. Yes indeed, I am also pretty crazy.

by matt | 28 Dec 2007 18:12 | San Francisco, United States |
Po’ Paulo! Nem fala isso cara que eu quero ir tambem…mas tou longe demais!

by Tomas Reyes | 29 Dec 2007 08:12 |
Oh man, I just signed up :) This is my first workshop of this sort. I’m ecstatic to say the least. I’m from Poland but live in NY/NJ area so anybody local going and wants to hook up – just let me know. Anybody non-local and wants to talk – still let me know :)

by Agnieszka M. | 10 Jan 2008 09:01 | New York, United States |
Anyone wants to go from Rome or Italy? I’m waiting to sign up to check the flight cost (until now nothing less than 1098,58 €) and… to see if I win a World Press (Febr 8) may be I can go for free as a teacher.. :) or I’m also good in washing dishes (may be better than shooting)

by laura montanari | 10 Jan 2008 14:01 | rome, Italy |
About 99% sure I will be attending (from Seattle, WA), and using it as an excuse to kickoff some extended traveling. This would be my first photo program of any sort ever, and I’m very excited!

by Ethan Welty | 17 Jan 2008 10:01 | Seattle, United States |
Hey, I’m a student photojournalist from Victoria Canada and will be graduating from college the same week as the workshop :) I’m really excited for Mexico (I’ve never been). I’d love to travel for a while afterwards, so if anyone’s looking for a buddy let me know.

by Lu Clarke | 11 Apr 2008 16:04 | Victoria, Canada |
Hi Lu and everyone,

I’m staying in Mexico from 15-25 and then heading to Cuba for a week. If anyone wants to join, you’re more than welcome.

by Paulo Fehlauer | 12 Apr 2008 06:04 | São Paulo, Brazil |
Hay, I’m also comming.
I’ll be finalizing everything here (work stuff) this week, and if everything goes as planned – I’m coming too :)

I’ll probably be arriving about a week before the workshop & staying in the city for about a wekk after it ends, so if anyone else is there early – I’ll be happy to get together. :)

by Gidi Morris | 12 Apr 2008 21:04 | Tel Aviv, Israel |
I can’t go so anybody who planned on coming yet didn’t sign up yet you can take my tuition for a fair price (I paid full $500) let me know via PM or mail.

by Agnieszka M. | 12 Apr 2008 21:04 | New York, United States |
are you selling it for less, because isn’t the tuition normally $500?

by mustafah abdulaziz | 13 Apr 2008 00:04 | Philadelphia, United States |
Hi Paulo, Gidi… everyone :) I haven’t booked my flight yet, but I’ll probably head down a few days early too (maybe around the 12th or 13th). I’d be happy to get together before the workshop. Let me know.

by Lu Clarke | 13 Apr 2008 01:04 (ed. Apr 13 2008) | Victoria, Canada |
lu, you should fly out of seattle. its a lot cheaper.

as for arriving early i am arriving on the afternoon of the 9th.

by skyler b. ramin | 13 Apr 2008 01:04 (ed. Apr 13 2008) | Vancouver, Canada |
Sascha, thanks so much for the tip that’s way cheaper then anything I’ve found so far. I’m not sure if I can leave that early due to school but let me look into it. I’ll try to sort things out in the next couple of days and will let you know. I can’t message you because my LS account is less then two weeks old, so do you have an email address I could use? If not I’ll just post here.

Cheers

by Lu Clarke | 13 Apr 2008 02:04 | Victoria, Canada |
mustafah, exactly how you assumed.

by Agnieszka M. | 13 Apr 2008 02:04 | New York, United States |
Does anyone think the organisers would have a problem if I took Agnieszka’s place on the foundry course? I never got round to applying, but would find the tuition invaluable.

thanks

by Elliot Taylor | 13 Apr 2008 07:04 | London, United Kingdom |
Hi everyone.

I am still looking for cheap flights (prices are going up fast). Does anyone here use kayak.com? I am flying from Los Angeles (LAX) and currently the cheapest is $336.

I think I will be there from the 10th to the 24th or 25th. Anyone going as early as I am?

Feel free to talk to me if you’re flying from LA or anywhere in CA. Talk to me for whatever reason, actually… or expect me to message you at some point.

I’m currently starting to make connections so I can be more prepared. I’m sure many of you already know each other and most people here have already done this sort of thing before. My world includes regular non-photojournalism people, so I am really excited about meeting new like-minded folks.

by Iman Al-Dabbagh | 13 Apr 2008 07:04 | Anaheim, CA, United States |
Oh, and if you’re in the Bay Area and going to attend Foundry, I am going to be there next weekend. Let me know if you want to meet up while I’m there (Apr 17-21).

by Iman Al-Dabbagh | 13 Apr 2008 07:04 | Anaheim, CA, United States |
Elliot,
I contacted Eric to ask him if I could do that and I got his OK on it.

by Agnieszka M. | 13 Apr 2008 14:04 | New York, United States |
imam,

i am flying from seattle (sea) to lax to mex for $400 for both ways.

the l.a. part is an air alaska flight that is leaving from lax at 1025am on the 9th of june and arriving 4pm in mex, i think its flight 244t.

welcome to join me in lax as i have a pretty long wait and then we can arrive as a fpw contingent.

by skyler b. ramin | 13 Apr 2008 15:04 | Vancouver, Canada |
Iman, and any others comin in early….

Give me a shout when yer on the ground, and Ill be around, no matter how early ya come in.

Paz

by Brian L Frank | 15 Apr 2008 16:04 | Chiapas, Mexico |
Iman, Brian and everyone :)

I arrive on the 14th (sat) and would love to meet up if you’re interested. I’ll be staying for about a month (longer if I can). Is anyone else planning to stay a while? I’m just starting to get organized and make connections too… If anyone has any advise it would be really appreciated! This will be my first workshop/photo trip. I’m really excited to meet everyone; This will be so great!

Also I’m looking for a roommate to cut costs, so if anyone else is still looking let me know.

Lu

by Lu Clarke | 15 Apr 2008 21:04 | Victoria, Canada |
Sascha, Brian, Lu, and everyone else…

I’m arriving on the 12th and leaving on the 25th.

Sascha I was going to be on your same flight from LAX but it was a little early for me (I finish school the day after). It would’ve been good to be on the same flight :)

Anyone leaving from LA on United Airlines at 1pm?
Anyone arriving to Mexico at 6:31pm on the 12th?

by Iman Al-Dabbagh | 16 Apr 2008 21:04 | Anaheim, CA, United States |
Sorry Iman I arrive on the 14th at 10am (via Seattle – Dallas – DF) anyone else going that way?

Iman are you by chance looking for a flatmate for the week? I’m just starting to look into accommodations.

Lu

by Lu Clarke | 16 Apr 2008 21:04 | Victoria, Canada |
Anybody leaving from the San Diego area. I’m flying out from Tijuana Thurday night, arriving Friday morning. The cost is about 135.00 for a one way ticket on Volaris. It might save you a few pennys if your flying out of San Diego.

www.volaris.com.mx

by Jesus V. | 17 Apr 2008 18:04 (ed. Apr 17 2008) | San Diego, United States |
Oh, man… $135! I wish… over $1000 USD for the tickets from Brazil. Anyways, I’m arriving on the 15th and staying until the 25th, then Cuba.

by Paulo Fehlauer | 17 Apr 2008 18:04 | São Paulo, Brazil |
thought just crossed my mind,

is anyone coming that isn’t already part of light stalkers, i suppose here is the wrong place to ask.

either way its going to be a serious light stalkers madhouse.

by skyler b. ramin | 17 Apr 2008 18:04 | Vancouver, Canada |
I arrive on Tuesday the 10th from Seattle on a special direct AeroMexico flight #671 which only takes 5 hours. If anyone else from Seattle is looking, there is currently a special for this flight ($250, on expedia) which is only a few bucks more than the 1-2 stop flights.

ALSO, just noticed that a Slideluck Potshow is scheduled to be held in Mexico City on the 21st of June:
http://slideluckpotshow.ning.com/group/slideluckpotshowmexico

by Ethan Welty | 26 Apr 2008 01:04 | Seattle, United States |
thats 250 one way right?

you might want to get a return ticket of some sort as border types are sometimes suspect of people with one way tickets.

nice that its so quick though, i have a 12 hour wait in l.a. which i am not looking forward to but the ticket was dirt cheap so i can’t complain too much.

slidepot looks good,

see you in df.
