Odessa

The Black Sea metropolis, commercial and business centre, is a city of a thousand contradictions. Opulence and poverty mingle in a chaotic way. The city centre, similar to Paris, Vienna and Turin, is the target of immense European real estate investments. As a result, the splendid 17th century buildings have new façades and interiors untouched. Others are emptied and transformed into shopping centres. The Soviet Union still have a strong presence with its rabbit warren like blocks in the urban areas. The harbour has been renovated. Apart from the portual activity (quay crane, containers, tankers, etc), the touristic activity is growing as well with the edification of the gigantic 5 stars Odessa Hotel by the sea and in the centre of the landing terminal. Right behind it, the imposing Potemkin Stair, symbol of the 1905 Revolution, rise towards the city. Another landmark is the Opera, a 17th century edifice in Austrian style, among the most beautiful of Europe. Of the three ports to which Odessa have access, are intermediaries of an intense illicit trade of cars and frozen foods. Merchandise that end up in Moldavia and Transnistria and then return to Ukraine. Since a few years now, Odessa is one of the seat of Eugam, European Union Security Mission that controls the trafficking of stowaways, arms and drugs.
