Students protestsA series of college students demonstrations took place in France from March to May 2008. Tens of thousands took to the streets , esp. in Paris, to protest against the reforms proposed by M. Xavier Darcos, the Education Minister, and the resulting cut in the number of teachers. These demonstrations were characterized by systematic violence from teenagers coming from the different suburbs ("banlieue"), often fighting each others, and resulting in extremely heavy police presence and many arrests.
