American Dream: A vision to the south-west boarder of Mexico. Images by Giovanni Melillo
The migration from South America to the United States is ever since identified with the North boarder between Mexico and the U.S.A. My intention is to present the situation of the fluid migration found in the South East boarder between Mexico and Guatemala, the gate from the Centre to the Nort. This particular boarder region is divided by the Suchiate River delimiting the Mexican city of Ciudad Hidalgo and the city of Tecún Umán in Guatemala. The area is best known for the infant prostitution, youth crime organization "Mara Salvatrucha" and smuggling of any kind.
The deep economical depression of the most Latin American countries has developed a culture for the migration to the U.S.A. During decades, the migrant exceed with the own aims and bounds, losing the respect of his identities and lives.
Most of the Central American migrants try to hop freight trains heading the North. Often they get injured in the process. The train is usually called "the beast." Legless victims are not an uncommon sight in the towns of the border.
