[ old habits: elderly addiction ]

the images presented are from a 2.5 year personal project exploring the consequences of elderly addiction in harlem. each of my subjects' live in a single-room-occupancy,low income hotel in harlem, where narcotics abuse and addiction are prevalent. each man pictured is over the age of 55 and, in most cases, has been suffered from addiction for decades.

lyric r. cabral is a freelance photographer, journalist, black and white fine printer, and educator based out of brooklyn, new york. lyric is currently a contributor to “click! photography changes everything”, an online initiative of the Smithsonian Institution.
in 2007 lyric was a recipient of the Howard Chapnick grant for the Advancement of Photojournalism, administered by the Eugene Smith memorial fund. the grant funds were received based on her co-creation of the bridge project, an organization that brings photojournalism instruction to youth in communities lacking photographic opportunities.
